Pass this on to your wife. When I had my daughter and went to visit my mom and dad who had a boxer that had never been around children (their boxer was about 2 at the time) was the best thing. Whenever my daughter would whimper in her crib in the back bedroom, the dog would come to me and give off this little bark and run back to the bedroom. If I didn't come follow her, she'd do it again. Then as my daughter got older and in to her toddler years and I'd go visit my parents, their boxer (Daisy) would basically walk around my daughter when we were playing in the yard. And when inside, she'd follow my daughter (and eventually my nephew when he got older) through the house as if to keep an eye on her. She was a great dog! My parents have since had 2 other boxers who did the same thing with my son and my neice.

We used to have a gorgeous Siberian with powder blue eyes. She was a great dog, but when we moved back into the city into an apartment, she was miserable. Our friends had a big backyard and they adopted her from us. She was extremely hyper! She lived out a good life with them, and passed on 2 and a half years ago.

Well, still no pix, daughter working late tonight. Tomorrow for sure, promise.

Lauren, while I *totally* agree with you about the whole rescue/adopting thing, I do also realize that there are times when someone wants a specific breed, that they can train from puppy hood, etc, etc that would necessitate purchasing vs adopting. That said, I wish I could hold my head high like I did something good here. We were simply so fortunate to have been there when there was the breed my son has been wanting. (And to have been there early!! Another lady was only about 3 people behind us who wanted her!!) And the fact that I didn't really have the patience level for a puppy. giggle! But I tell you what, the best experiences that I've had in my lifetime with dogs have been those that we got from the pound or a shelter! They seem to know that you cared enough to save them.

So, Boxers.... yep, we've got one of those, too. Actually, ours is a mix (looks to be mixed with American Bulldog type), but her personality is totally Boxer (with the added strength of the bulldog). Gotta say, I love her, but I love her more now than I did a year and a half ago when she was puppy-aged! She has oodles of energy, has no idea how incredibly strong she is, and loves ALL people! However, she especially loves her people and is super protective. Which can be a good thing. Right now, tho, we're having to help her to realize that the new dog is a friend, not a foe. But it's all good! She's smiling at the newcomer now! But as I'm sure you know, never leave ANY dog unattended with a little one. I don't think most Boxers would ever intentionally harm one of their people, they just don't always seem to be able to realize their own strength and energy level.

Update; we've renamed the new dog ~ Spyder! My brother always used to joke (probably only HALF joking) that if he ever had a kid he'd name him/her Spyder. Since he never has (and it's looking like he never will ), we've all wanted to name somebody/something that. So this pretty new girl gets the honor. And surprisingly it fits her.

Pix tomorrow ~ I promise!!

aww, you guys are lucky to have Spyder, aka Sylvia.... LOL...
and when you told the story of her resting her sweet chin on your shoulder as you were driving, even MY heart melted....
honest... I can just feel that....
the way animals communicate with us and express their love and affection for us is so very very tender and almost even intimate.... what a treasure...

a relationship with a treasured animal/pet has its own special charm and satisfaction......
I am so glad that Spyder has found his family!!!
thanks again for doing that....

a hee hee hee! We're just glad that Spyder found her family with us!! (Gosh, I feel so selfish about that, but DANG we love her!! ) This is quickly becoming an interesting journey. Looks like whoever was Spyder's first family spoiled her. She likes furniture (is currently taking up residence on my daughter's bed) and begs with her eyes for people food. She doesn't have any of those "I've been beat before" flinches, and seems so at ease with all the hugs, kisses, and attention she's getting. I grieve for them, they must miss her terribly. She's wonderful beyond words.

Interesting side note, it was my 11yos that we were getting the dog for. We first looked at the Rescue 100, and then checked the shelter as well, when it sounded like the rescued Huskies would all be adopted by their foster homes. Found a dog at the shelter that my son fell head over heals for but wasn't available yet. Heard that Silvia would be available, did the whole "family conference" thing about would we be willing to get 2 if it worked out that way. Well, Silvia/Spyder has "adopted" my 13yod!!! So now we really hope we'll be there at the right time to get the one at the shelter!!

Jules - I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to hear that Spyder aka Silvia is doing so well with your family! I suspected that she would just fall in and become an endearing member of your family......it's just so great to know it happened!

The Adopt-A-Thon found permanent homes for 29 wonderful dogs - likely 30 if you could the hairless Chi that is melting the heart of his foster Mom! -LOL Five lucky dogs remain in private ACS foster homes and the remainder are now being worked up to become part of some rescue groups that have offered to help with those that continue to need help finding permanent families!

ALL of the dogs seemed to have such a great time yesterday - socializing with canine friends and human friends alike!

Jules - I happen to have a few SUPER pictures of your adoption day with Silvia if you'd like me to post one for you! I won't until you okay that?!

Thanks to everyone who kept these dogs in their thoughts - even if you couldn't add one to your home right now!

Vicki

Hey Vicki!! Good morning!!

That would be fine to post pix of Silvia/Spyder's adoption day! I finally retrieved our camera from my daughter's "possession", so it'll be awhile before I can figure it all out.

Spyder continues to be wonderful. She slept in my 13yod's room, kissed her to wake her up this morning and Ella jumped right up to take her out. When they came back in, Spyder got her leash and sat patiently beside Ella with it for a couple of seconds until Ella giggled and said, "ok, let's go for a walk!" So cute!

The Adopt A Thon was SOOOOOOOO amazing! The one young lady who was looking for her dog that she had been looking for the past year ~ when we saw her it looked like she had found her dog! Another family that we had met last week at the shelter and then ran into while waiting to come in looked like they found a friend (they were looking at Annie, I think). I bet there's a lot of heart warming stories!

We'll definitely keep in touch, and will be signing up to volunteer soon! (And we'll be popping in to check on the boy at the shelter frequently! )

I couldn't find any info on a ' adopt a thon' in SA- I wish I had known about it. It is 1pm appxox on Sun, and I knew nothing. I Googled and found nothing for this year, only 2007. Where/when? Thanks.

ilmd - the first notice was in this thread, which ran for about a week:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/san-a...ated-city.html

If you'll notice, jules07 first post was yesterday (Saturday), which was actually the date of the event.

I'd like to encourage everyone to visit the SA Animal Services facility...they have literally dozens and dozens of dogs or cats to choose from. They are closed on Sunday and Monday.

Rottnboys is a volunteer for the shelter and I'm sure will be on later to shed more light on the adoptions process there.

Don't let the fact that you missed this one deter you from finding another best friend at the shelter! All the dogs are spaye/neutered, have had shots, and been microchipped when they are taken home. There's such a problem with strays, owner surrenders, and unwanted litters being born - please make room in your heart and your home for one more!
