Huh?? Isn't the restaurant in Neimen called "Mariposa"? And as far as I know, Cafe Paladar is still open and using that name; Home
Anyway, I hate to sound cynical, but hafta agree with other folks who've posted about this. SA doesn't need any more fast food/burger places. To me, the Checkers/Rally concept is just too close to Sonic and there's a zillion of those. If your friends want to franchise, I'd highly suggest and encourage them to find something a little more new/unique and preferably something somewhat healthy.

We used to get food from Checkers in Maryland and Florida, I was hooked on their burgers and fries back then but I have to agree that S.A. needs another fast food outlet like it needs Taquería (however, that doesn't stop people from opening them!). I am alredy surprised that a second Krystal is opening up on Culebra as the one over by Ingram Mall has already closed once (and later re-opened). It was hugely popular at first but quickly waned. Whereas I don't think Sonic is that good, they are extremely popular and would bury any attempt to compete against it.
Bottom line: I wouldn't bet on seeing a Checkers in San Antonio!
Cheers! M2

Cafe Paladar, used to be called another name for over a year, and when Neimen came into Town, they sued the couple that owned it which made it change to "Cafe Paladar". The reason it was on KSAT News, is that Neimen no longer use that name in any of their new buildings, but they still forced the couple to change the traded name!
As for McDonald having a double drive through concept, I think they are all transforming into that. Fast Food sales depend on the drive through 70+%
Yeah Crystals is now operated through corprate and gong into Culebra and South West Military. There is also a Carl's Jr going on 151 and Ingram.
I think San Antonio, is growing so much that we will start seeing these concepts whether its fast food or other businesses spreading all over.
I know my friends tried to bring in In n Out burgers but they said they do NOT franchise at the time.
I agree Sonic to me does NOT taste good at all, I think What A Burger or even Jack would have FAAAR better burgers than Sonic. Maybe what keeps them busy is their drinks? I don't know. But for the folks that I talk to about Checkers they are ALL IN for the taste!
Funny I think they are putting the Checkers on Patranco and 1604 by the HEB Plus! And yes a Panera Bread would do great there I don't know why the franchisee picked his current location anyways!

Another place that would do REALLY well here (IMHO) is Firehouse Subs! I talked to the guy at the store on Babcock and asked if there was any chance that there was one going in this direction (they have 3 in SA I think now, and closest to us is Babcock/Huebner in the HEB plaza there)...he said, SURE, YOU WANT TO OPEN IT???
He sounded serious about them seeking franchisee's and their sandwichs are AWESOME!

Rather than another fast food franchise, I'd really like to see some independent sandwich shops with good sandwiches - french bread, good ingredients....
At least I do have one a short walk from my office, but I wish such a meal wasn't so hard to find here.

It is interesting to see how certain fast food places are very popular in one city and yet fail in another. A couple of examples:
James Coney Island (hot dog place)...there was only one on Nachodoches...and it was always packed and it closed down after a couple of years, yet there are over 30 locations in Houston. I heard the employees were dealing dope out of it...and it lead to its downfall.
Ralleys (another double drive thru burger place)...they built several locations in the 80's/90's...great food...always a line...yet they closed down. These are still going strong in St. Louis and other cities.
Krystal is huge in the South....ours closed down within months of opening. I personally think they are terrible.
Chic A filet is wildly popular and popping up all over SA, yet you will be hard pressed to find one in Chicago.
I think a lot of it boils down to location and management.
I have always heard great things about Checkers and look forward to some locations on the Northside of SA.
