Boerne is definitely a suburb of San Antonio now. Same with Castroville, albeit with a bit more rural land in between still (not for long - just drove out that way a few days ago and it's full of earth moving equipment )

As for Kerrville, I think it's tied to SA, but it's less likely to become a suburb anytime soon. The I-35 corridor is a bit different because it has Austin on the north and SA on the south to link it. Kerrville doesn't have another city north of it to sprawl to or from. It has its link to SA via I-10, but there's not much else and there's still a lot of rural area between SA and there and not much to drive expansion. The only way I see it really closing in is if Kerville really expands itself - with industry, allowing for a population boom. It's still a fairly small town, and though there's some development, it's not nearly to the same level as Boerne.

Kerrville is less connected geographically, but in my experience, residents there identify with SA to an only slightly smaller extent than Boerne.
I don't know... I have family in Kerrville and they have a ranch and horses, and I guess thanks to that, that's how I always picture Kerrville. But I mean, they don't really consider themselves part of SA, or even near SA, but rather NW of SA (do you know what I mean?) It's like San Marcos which is also 2 counties over so about the same distace away- they don't say that they're part of San Antonio or Austin, they're San Marcos.
It's like saying Poteet is part of SA or something...

In CT we said that southern CT is a suburb of NYC and northern CT is a suburb of Boston, and it's a whole different state.

There is such a thing as a metro area - Kyle, TX is now considered a suburb of Austin, which links it to Austin. I've no doubt the old timers don't feel like they're part of Austin, but all those folks buying houses in the new subdivisions probably feel like they're part of Austin more than Kyle.

As for Kerrville, I think it has a long ways to go (fortunately for Kerrville), before it becomes a suburb of SA, esp. as SA has so many more directions to grow and there's not much else to link it.

But who knows...

Years ago Cucamonga was out in the boonies (it was some mythical place in my childhood mind) and had nothing to do with Los Angeles. Now it's basically a suburb of LA, and the suburban sprawl reaches far beyond it.

I can't answer that, and will say when I was commuting there, there was no one on I-10 past Boerne, but the road inbound to SA from Boerne was packed.

Once the area to Boerne fills in, maybe it'll continue to sprawl north. I'm not convinced it'll happen very fast though, unless kerrville becomes an industry center, as there are 3 other directions for SA to sprawl, and it appears to be taking advantage of that for the time being.

See that's kinda what I mean- I don't really see SA reaching Kerville, except maybe in the DISTANT DISTANT DISTANT future. SA looks like it's growing West, North East, and South (as long as the City South program keeps working out alright)

If there are, they're older or don't have kids. Kerrville ISD has remained steady at just under 5000 students for over 5 years.

I'm talking Moderator cut: inappropriate here so take everything with a grain of salt since I have no numbers to back this up. It seems to me that Kerrville is growing but at a small pace. I think that with gas prices the way they are that more younger people will move out of Kerrville than into Kerrville. The reason being that it's going to get harder to find a job and force more people to move to San Antonio or another larger city. The section of the population moving into Kerrville that the gas prices and job market probably won't effect so much (and also a very large part of Kerrville's present population) is the retired population. Since most of them are living off pensions/social security/etc finding a job and the commute to work will not be as much of an issue.

So my best guess is that Kerrville will see a small growth in it's retired population and either not much growth or a drop in the 18-50 year old population. But again, this is a total shot in the dark and I could be way off.
