Thanks for the great suggestions! Next trip to H-E-B, a big bag of Milagro chips (they are indeed the best), and ... <scribbles shopping list>...

Do yourself a favor and pick up some Dom's Chop salsa. It's fantastic and has been a favorite of mine since it came out. A friend of mine makes it.

We love salsa but rarely use it at home, mostly because the jarred stuff just doesn't taste anything like what you can get at practically any taqueria in town. The only one I really ever somewhat liked is On the Border, mild. I am not a fan of the restaurant but their jarred salsa is good. I was so excited to see Taco Cabana's salsas in squeeze bottles at HEB and they were both gross. The red and the green. I love their fresh red salsa but we don't eat there, ever. Their food is just not good anymore. Yes, it used to be.

Dom's Chop Salsa
Yep, Dom makes a pretty killer grilled salsa!

Slightly off topic but it seems that Julio's is now putting their salsa in jars. It used to be in plastic tubs in the fridge section. Is that right?

Similar to the Taco Cabana, Whataburger now has their salsas at HEB.

Cocina Fresca, available in the produce section at HEB is pretty good.

Okay... now I have to reveal something about myself that may be a game-changer, salsa-wise-speaking.

I don't like the taste of cilantro. <ducks behind a display of Rick Bayless' Green Chile Salsa> I can't help it. I'm one of Those People. I love pico del gallo, but without cilantro. There is one restaurant in town, I think it might be Blanco Cafe, that doesn't put cilantro in their pico.

(Aside: whereas, Moshe's Golden Falafel puts cilantro in every-dang-thing! As alluded to above, I like to watch America's Test Kitchen?Cook's Country, and even they will ruin a perfectly wonderful dish by piling a cup of fresh cilantro on it at the end.)

Some people with the aversion say it tastes like soap. I'll have to know y'all a lot better before I can tell you what it tastes like to me. I have friends who pile the fresh stuff high on their chalupas. Blech. I can barely stand to walk past a display of the stuff in the produce department.

I'll be trying some of the salsas suggested after seeing how high up cilantro is on the list of ingredients.
