I think the $700/mo is to the low side for a place you'd consider to fit your criteria. I'm sure some others will weigh in.

But first, you need to give folks and idea as to where in SA you want to locate, and where you'll be working. That's going to drive most of the other recommendations.

But in the meantime - Welcome to Texas!

I paid $685 in the Medical Center a few years ago for a large 1/1 but no way would you get a 2/1 for under $700 and be in a safe area. I had no safety concerns. It's doable but on the upper end of your budget. Good luck.

I paid $650 for a 2 bedroom in a safe area, and I had the limitation of having a dog. The rent increased to $675 when I moved in 2014. It might be nearly impossible to find a place like that for under $700 now; I don't know. I do know that most people on this forum don't have any experience with searching for cheap places in decent neighborhoods, or they think some neighborhoods are unsafe when they aren't.

You might want to check around the Nacogdoches area between 410 and Wurzbach Pkwy. There's only one apartment complex in that area that I would avoid due to horrible maintenance. It's an ethnically diverse area that is close to a larger black population around Austin Hwy and Walzem that may have some hairstylists who can do braids.
