Indoor ranges are inherently pricey out of necessity. There is a mind numbing list of OSHA safety requirements that are very costly. Things like robust air filtration systems to prevent lead dust contamination, HEPA filters, lead wipe tests, bullet traps, sound attenuation, etc. They are not cheap to operate and maintain.

The liability insurance of a gun range probably isn't cheap either. Rightfully so.

Good to get a new range. However, the only time I use them is to test out a new gun in a controlled lane. Otherwise, I shoot competitions as just shooting at a square target with no movement gets old. The simulator sounds fun though.

Membership - here's my take. You need to figure out how many times you shoot and that fee vs. the membership price and the fee for a membership discounted session. Also, they may give a discount on guns but you need to see if it compares to prices at a gun show or Academy, if you add the membership fee. Since I shoot competitions, $49 a month isn't worth it. Do you buy memberships to get to go to Red Lobster?

There was a range off Grissom that did the membership dance and when I told the guy I could solve the linear equations for the best deal of number of times using vs. membership, the store commando had a hissy fit.

They closed for being business clowns and funky employees. The owner of ranges in Austin told me that had no business model experience.

But if it gets new folks a quality experience, I welcome these places and will check them out. I do like a nice little range up on 46 - Ballistic Therapy - modern and laid back. Good folks.

One problem with ranges - you see lots of scary folks. At Nardis, there was commando with a Tek-9 looking gun. He would load up a full 30 round or so mag and blaze away at 3 yards. Covered a B-27 from top to bottom. Impressive!
