At Sam's I bought a queen size mattress & box spring for about $350 final total. Right after I bought them the mattress dropped $43 and the box spring dropped $12. Of course I went and got the difference back...

I gotta tell you that we just purchased a mattress (king) and the whole nine yards this past weekend. We're moving into new home in a couple of weeks and decided to do some upgrades to our master BR and some other rooms. Anyway, didn't go to Billy Bob's and check things out but we did go to a couple of the specialy "matress" stores around 1604 between Culebra and Bandera....I told hubby that it amazes me that there are mattress stores on pratically every corner!! But..I digress.....I like the mattress store selections but I was TOTALLY turned off by the sales people and the sales tactics...it was very "canned" and hokey with them wanting us to lay on "every" mattress etc., even after I told them our budget. Sorry, but I'm not spending $3000 on a mattress for goodness sakes!!! I know that buying a "good" mattress is important as it affects your sleep (and ultimately then your overall well being) but I can sleep just fine on a reasonably priced mattress and I sure don't need top of the line. The "box" Mattress stores were so phoney I could not wait to get out of there!!
We ultimately decided to purchase our mattress at the furniture store where we were buying lots of other items (we found a competent person to work with at Lack's, Bandera and 1604, who was not high pressure and seemed very knowlegeable about overall furniture). We found the mattress prices there to be in line with the other prices we saw...not willing to drive all over town to save $100-$150..we would probably spend that much in gas just comparing prices these days!!! We've decided in all our "shopping" for the new house that our time and gas are worth it to just consolidate as much as possible into one or two vendors, not to mention delivery fees etc. Course, that's just us and we found things we liked very much in the places we visited.
We're happy with our selections and excited about getting back to sitting/sleeping on comfortable furniture and beds after 3 months of rented sfuff!!!

Yeah. What's the deal with those people? They hover over me asking me how I like it and keep bothering me. Most of those stores are very small. If I need some help I will find them. I just need to lay on the mattress for a while. I have to almost yell at them to leave me alone. They are selling the "sale" rather than selling the mattress. I hate it. I need a new mattress right now. But I have been to about 7 different stores and they all act like that. It's like some type of scam or racket (as mentioned in another post). I don't mind paying 3K for a really good mattress. But I feel like I"m paying for a commission rather than a quality product.
Can the mattresses at Sam's and Cosco be testing (laid on) before purchase.
Can a person shop there without a membership? If so, what is the markup?
Thanks

Yes, Billy bob's commercial is annoying, but he probably has some of the best prices in town. I have never heard any horror stories about him, just the opposite. We bought our bed there, the staff was knowledgeable, helpful and even helped us to secure the mattress in our vehicle, free of charge.
Will definitely go back.

When we moved to town we bought beds for our kids and guest room at Billy Bobs. Sure, it's fairly scary in there, and you feel sort of like you're buying something off the back of a truck - but really, I did look around and they have decent brands/mattresses. I thought their prices were very good, and we have been happy with the mattresses.
We also looked at Costco and Sams, and their mattresses are good and priced well, but as far as I know they don't deliver, and Billy Bob's does, which is why we went with them.
I agree that Mattress Firm, etc. seem very overpriced and the salespeople turn me off so much, I simply won't go back. When we get a new mattress for ourselves, which we need soon, I'll get a sleep number if I win the lottery, otherwise I guess I may go back to Billy Bob's or try Costco online, which I think DOES deliver...

Costco delivers mattresses, but only if you order online.
