Lidl, a German discount supermarket chain known as a disruptor in the U.S. grocery industry, has more than doubled its land holdings in San Antonio this month, property records show.
The German grocer bought 5.3 acres near the intersection of Alamo Ranch and Lone Star parkways on the city's far West Side from a limited partnership called Abiso Alamo Ranch on Sept. 7, according to Bexar County deed records.
The land is within spitting distance of an H-E-B store slated to open in November at the intersection of Alamo and Alamo Ranch parkways.

Not sure if Fresh & Easy ever had a presence here in TX (they were briefly in CA but failed), but the whole idea of Lidl sounds a lot like the F&E approach. I don't think they will do well here. HEB is just too good.

They've done very well on the east coast while battling Kroger.
They have deep pockets and are aiming all over the US.

They're a huge chain with plenty of experience, they'll succeed. Won't ever take over HEB, but they'll eat into the market share for Texas.

Lidl seems to be planning their expansion better than Fresh & Easy did.

I'm surprised Aldi, their main competitor back in Europe, hasn't made it to San Antonio/Austin yet. They started in DFW and then focused on Houston. Lidl might be trying to capture loyalty from the first-mover advantage, especially with the monopoly of H-E-B in San Antonio (and Austin to a lesser extent).

I'm personally looking forward to Lidl arriving here in Houston and comparing the offerings of the two chains. Aldi has some unique European items (mostly German) and those are the things I usually will purchase from them. But many people buy most groceries from their limited selection.

I'll be happy to see Lidl here! And if Aldi eventually gets here, even better! We need some competition, some variety!

Because this is TEXAS and H.E.B. is king around these here parts! lol

But yes, variety is important, but H.E.B. seems to keep up with the customer "demand" of having a variety of products and if not, we still have Whole Foods, Trader Joes and H.E.B. Marketplace which caters to organics and specialized products. I personally don't have any issues with the H.E.B. dominating the market here.

Well hopefully they will build on the Northeast side. We have so much growth out here it's outrageous. Still waiting for HEB to build their new one in Cibolo. I work for the local school district and we were told they were going to put one in on FM1103, right across from the Auto Zone. I have asked several times at HEB Plus in Schertz, buit none of the employees really know anything.
