A good old F--- off, I'm busy is all it takes.

I give em the outstretched hand and say loudly, "get back, get back". I give to these folks through Christian outreaches so I don't feel bad for protecting my space and my person.

I didn’t have cash just plastic.
The guy walked away.
As I was leaving, I saw him get into his car which was a much newer one than
what I was driving.

I once saw a guy who didn't look like a bum, and was polite - not pushy. He said he was out of work for a while, but heading for an interview. He asked to give him a chance. Didn't ask for money. I told him to pull over, and filled his car with $10 worth of gas. He was sincerely very grateful, he made my day probably as much I made his.
I am not giving money, ever. But I might buy a meal if it feels right.

I was leaving a restaurant with a friend.
An old lady was outside begging for coins to buy food.
My friend felt sad and asked the woman to order what ever she wanted,
he would gladly pay for it.

The woman insisted on money.
She had a strong odor of alcohol.
Soon after she started cursing at my friend.

I told my friend to go to the truck.
I gave the woman what ever change I had.
She smiled and said, “bless you son” and went on her way.

I've had guys holding an old car starter telling me they need money for a replacement.

Teen aged girls crying up a storm at the gas station wanting gas.

The most dangerous ones, this has happened to me twice in Houston:
Aggressive up close intimidator/beggars, two working together, at gas stations near the airport where you fill up the rent car before the flight home.
They know you are not likely armed at that time.

I saw a lot of that for awhile, here around Durham, NC. I told people I had no cash but had gas cards and would get them $10 worth of gas. A couple took me up on it, a couple said they'd rather have the money. I said, "out of luck then" and went on my way. Same with money for food. I'll buy you a meal or a bag of groceries.
