Valero Energy and AT&T are Fortune 100 companies headquartered here. USAA is Fortune 200. Clear Channel is in the Fortune 500. If you were compiling a list of the top 5 largest employers in town, you'd have to include HEB and the US government.

I think it really depends on what field you have experience in. These are the bigger companies in the city, but the best...well it depends on the circumstances
What are you loking for?

Rackspace is a great company, but hard to get into and they don't pay the best. I worked there for a couple weeks and was happy to finally get in, but I was offered a $better$ offer elsewhere
Isn't the federal government the largest employer here? I indirectly work for them now.

Rackspace - if you have at least a bachelor's in IT
USAA - hiring fewer Americans and importing more Muslim immigrants to work for them, so chances of landing a job there are slim.
AT&T - most work is customer service, and a lot of that is out-sourced to places like West Business Services.
Valero - can't go wrong. Good career job IF you can get your foot in the door.

Yup. Rackspace also has a training program - if you get into that, they offer you a job when you complete. At least they did about a year ago, when I was in the market...
I think the gvmt is probably the biggest IT employer here. Even if it's via contract and not direct civil service, etc. Are you looking for strictly IT?

I hire for the gov. and the pay rates are Great! But, They have specific requirements that apply to each position. There are many government contract positions within San Antonio. Yes, IT professionals are in demand.

Thanks to all of you!...... I will be looking for an Administrative Assistant/Executive Assistant/Assistant Manager position. I have worked in the construction, real estate, and country club business. I also coached volleyball for nearly 20 years, and have thought about becoming a personal trainer. Oregon is big into fitness, but I am not sure about the fitness industry in Texas. I am not apposed to going to school for what I need.
