Found one outside when I was working on my garden. It was under one of the edging stones the dogs had knocked over. Haven't seen any in the house, though.

Thanks for the reply, catriona. What I really find strange is that I don't recall seeing these ever before in my life, and then since my original post, they're everywhere (exaggeration alert! ). Maybe the worm snakes ate all the fireflies, because I never see those at all anymore...

Another critter I hadn't seen before was the ensign wasp. It was ID'd in this thread that I started last year:

Bug id?

They were more common in the 60s, when I was a kid. I never saw one more than three inches long or so until a couple of years ago I came across one about 7 inches long in my front yard. They are harmless, and beneficial. It's good to have them around.

Most of the ones I have seen have been in buildings! I wonder how they get there?

Just pulled 2 of these out of the pool drain. The larger one was well over a foot, and already dead.

We've found 2 blind snakes in our house in the last week or so. 1 in the hall bathroom and 1 in the bedroom next to that bathroom. I had heard that they get into the house through plumbing. Heard a story of a lady that relocated here from Southern California. Bought herself a nice plot of land outside of town near Castroville. Was showering one morning and 5 "hungry little snakes" were wiggling up through the drain. They were all blind snakes that had gotten in thru a small area where the plumbing pipes had come apart just a bit.

We think they're mighty cute! (But that's not sayin' much ~ just passed an almost dead rat snake in the road in our neighborhood a coupla hours ago and I keep thinking, "Poor snake! ")

I'm kind of like that with spiders. They are really neat looking critters, but I confess a large one would probably freak me out a little.

Thanks for the replies, all. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one seeing the worm snakes around.

At least we don't have to deal with the Australian Gippsland earthworm
