Default San Antonio Hobbyists

I've noticed only a few threads about hobbies in SA - more recently metal detecting.

What other hobbies/hobbyists are out there? Stamps? Geocaching? Potato propulsion devices? Any locations in the area that are great for detecting, bird watching, etc?

My family picked up geocaching recently - read about it for awhile, and finally got to it on our last vacation in Florida. I even got a new GPS for Christmas. We've seen some really neat places caching, and my kids seem to really get into it. Not the microcaches tho, they only care about the ones that give up toys!

I, too, got a GPS device just after Christmas, and we were supposed to start geocaching. Um, yeah, sure. I am still trying to talk my husband into getting out and at least faking it!

There are a ton of caches in San Antonio - I've only had time to find a few of them tho. I think there are about 20-30 within a 2-3 mile radius of my house!

The family and I have started hiking sometimes on the weekends. There is something like geocaching but it was before GPS. You try and find a hidden message in, say, a park-the clues are online-I can't remember what it's called!

That's called "letterboxing" right? Using clues to find the cache instead of devices?

I'm looking at plans for spud guns/launchers - I'd like to modify one (or get plans, they already exist) for pneumatic launchers with barrels big enough for t-shirts, stuffed animals, etc. I've seen them for sale for lots of money, but I've seen plenty that have been built.

Anyone have experience with this?

My girls are into it - and they're definitely NOT the outdoorsy types. Unless you mean swimming pools, playing, etc - not the type to enjoy having a bug within ten feet.

We have a great time finding the coordinates, and then letting the girls follow clues to find the caches...it's fun!

It sounds fun....but it's really hard to imagine what, exactly, you're doing.....

I think I'd have to do it to really understand what it's all about. Guess we'll try it when/if we get a navigation system (other than googlemaps, of course...)
