think lemon warheads times 100 if you eat raw rhubarb. That's why the pie is loaded to the gills with sugar. Great stuff

Yeah, the three states that produce almost all of the rhubarb for the country are Washington, Oregon, and Michigan. There is allegedly some rhubarb that does well in Amarillo, but San Antonio is not the climate for it at all. I also read that a person would have to eat several pounds of the leaves for it to be fatal and the bitterness of the plant would probably knock you out way before you got to death
I think maybe I'll ask them to make me a custom pie with about double the amount of rhubarb. One of the things I remember about eating rhubarb pie from my childhood was getting a piece that wasn't totally saturated with sugar. It sounds strange, but I always looked forward to thoroughly enjoying the pie and occasionally getting blasted with the bitter bite from hell. I think it made it more fun, in a Russian Roulette sorta way..

It grows really well in Northern Ontario, which is where I was introduced to rhubarb pie. No spank you. Blech. Maybe she didn't put enough sugar, but it was the tartest, grossest tasting stuff I'd ever eaten up to that 8th year of life. Scared me off pie until I was well into my 30's.

I still don't like pie much--prefer cake!

ha ha, that sucks, rhubarb by is the shiznit. I think the ratio of sugar to rhubarb has to be something like 100:1 though

No, the shiznit is the stuffed pork chops I just made for dinner. Mmmmm. HEB had some really nice thick cut boneless chops, so I decided to feed the crave I've had since spotting some pre-made ones at Super Target a few weeks back. I heart me.

There's a great rhubarb pie in a small cafe north of Fredericksburg called HILL TOP CAFE.

I think I'm actually going to get sick of rhubarb pie by the time I finish this one.. nobody else will eat it, so it is my duty to make sure not one crumb is wasted. Maybe next time I'll just get a nice big slice instead of the whole thing. However, if I would've only bought a slice and not offered anyone else some, they definitely would've yelled at me for being selfish.

Lemon Warheads times 100 !!! Other than being so tart and requiring a lot of sugar to make tolerable.............makes me think of gourds, grits or hominy that have no flavor until you add a lot of spices!! Not exactly a blank palate but similar!!

I wouldn't compare rhubarb with them. It's one of those things you just can't describe and something you have to taste for yourself.
