Default Why move to San Antonio

I am interested in hearing reasons one would move to San Antonio. Where do professionals in their thirties live and play in this city? Do people go to work, go home and shut their doors to the world or do they socialize with neighbors?

Are we trying to win you over or something? Socializing with your neighbors is up to you. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but my neighbors and I socialize, whether it's talking to each other outside when we intersect or sometimes we go play sports at the park, etc.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose my post was not well worded. I am really curious if people are social and friendly while at home as much as they are on the streets or if people tend to be more to themselves when they get home.

No, it wasn't well worded; nor was your post lambasting our downtown. San Antonians and Texans in particular are very friendly people by nature; but the one thing that tends to stick in people’s craws the most is when people come here from somewhere else and start complaining that it isn’t more like the place they left. Usually those folks are from California, but I guess Atlanta has its share as well…

As for Yuppies, there are various places to hang out, from the cigar clubs in the Stone Oak area to the jazz club on the Riverwalk, to shopping at La Cantera. The San Antonio 90210 set is out there if you feel you have to find them…

Honestly, I have said it numerous times before but I will repeat it one more time for your benefit…if you can’t have fun in San Antonio, than it isn’t the city that is the problem! There are a lot of great things to do here; but I will admit it is more of a family-oriented town. If you really want a truly you urban professional environment, try Austin.

Cheers! M2

You're sorta asking two different questions.

Most people move to SA for the same reason they move to any city: work. We've had strong job growth for a long time. Companies add jobs here because it's an inexpensive city (for business, housing, cost of living) with an overall pro-business climate and good weather.

Now, on to your "real" question.............

If you're curious as to where younger people socialize when they're not working.......that's a bit like asking "where do people live?". There are places everywhere. From Stone Oak to Southtown to the Southside. I'm in my low-30s, married with no kids, and we live in Monte Vista. We socialize (read: drink and tell lies) at Liberty Bar, LaFonda, LaTuna, Sam's, Joey's, Blue Star, Bombay Bicycle Club, 50/50, Tuckers, etc. And we can listen to live music at Sam's, Rock Bottom, Casbeers, White Rabbit, and Mix, all within 2 miles of our house.

I think we can call agree that very few folks move to SA because they expect the same sort of cultural/entertainment options and lifestyle available NYC, SF, or Chicago. Of course, there's not shortage of wailing and gnashing of teeth from people who move here and "discover" that SA doesn't have quite the culture opportunities that NYC, SF, or Chicago have.

Of course, I bet they don't miss paying $700/sf+ for a place to live................

I do have a kid, but socialize at a lot of the same places as dvlpr (not all, but most are kid friendly, there are more in Southtown).

We know our neighbors very well and are good friends. Many people in my 'hood spend a lot of time outside socializing.

Thanks to all of you - my question was really based soley in curiosity from not knowing anything about your town. I love the passion expressed in these messages. Thank you.
