I am glad that you shared your experience, don't get me wrong. It doesn't change the fact though that it scares the bejesus out of me. I am a small town girl who has never had to deal with a "gang". We are a military family, and there is a pretty good chance that my daughter will not attend the elementary school there. We are pretty sure that she will be able to attend the school on base. Worst case scenerio, we will only be there for three years. I think we'll be o.k. I really do appreciate your insight though

Default Not at all friend,

This is absurd. However it would be nieve to believe that racism does not occur in all ethnicities. I am not this way , but of course I have seen crazy people before. I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe meet the neighbors first if youare worried.

That would be the case here.
PLEASE, this is not the time to pull punches. If anyone has any experience or can tell me more about this, please let me know. I have a two and a four-year-old daughter and I don't want racial slurrs thrown at them.

I'd like to point something out. There are three human races - Caucasoids, Negroids and Asiatics (these are the scientific names). "Mexican-American", as opposed to "African-American", is really much more of a cultural designation rather than a racial one. Same with "Latino" and "Hispanic".

Many Mexican-Americans are, in fact, a blend of Caucasoid (European, especially Spanish) and Asiatic (American Indian), the percentages varying depending on the part of Mexico their ancestry derives from. Some are mostly American Indian (Asiatic), while others are mostly European (Caucasoid).

This is from Wikipedia - shows how hard it is, really, to put a label on someone (meaning many Mexican-Americans consider themselves to be "white"):

According to U.S. Census data from 2006, the racial composition of San Antonio is 65.0% White, 6.7% African American, 2.1% Asian, 0.5% Native American, 22.5% Other, and 2.1% from two or more races. However, 61.9% of the population identify themselves as being of Hispanic origin. Whites of non-Hispanic background were 31.83% of the population.[20]

Since I don't believe in races, I'll go ahead and share this with you
race is just a way some people chose to put us in groups.
BTW, many people think that Northern Europeans and South Europeans are 2 different races.

The invention of race
Justin Erik Halldór Smith: The Invention of Race

In an important sense it is the 17th-century French writer François Bernier who may be considered the founder of the modern science of race. He is the first to use the term ‘race’ to designate different groups of humans with shared, distinguishing traits. He describes his innovation in the Journal des Sçavans of 1684 as follows: “So far, Geographers did not use any other criterion when mapping out the earth but that of the different countries or regions to be found on it. What I noticed in men in the course of my long and frequent travels gave me the idea to divide the Earth otherwise.”

Honestly, it's just semantics at this point - no, Hispanics are not a different race than Caucasians, but there is ABSOLUTELY a cultural difference and everyone here knows that cultural difference is what we're talking about here.

Also, try being the first white-non-Hispanic person to marry into a very large, very Tex-Mex, very Spanish-speaking family. You think moving into a neighborhood is intimidating...

Anyone can be very well oriented, it just depends on one's inner morals and values it doesnt matter what one person is. Dont forget to look at perspectics from their point of views before attempting to change the world, try changin something about oneself in order to achive true inner peace

It's just a group of people, that's all.

In the US people use "races" and hispanic is supposed to be a different race
the problem is that all hispanics are not the stereotypical mexican (part Spaniard, part Native American)

You have people that go from Carl Herrera (ex-Spurs) to George Lopez to Cameron Diaz to Fujimori (Peru's ex-president)
They are all hispanics, we come in all flavors

Who the heck told you that? It's San Antonio, MOST neighborhoods are predominantly hispanic. The CITY is predominantly hispanic!! And when I think of SA I have quite the opposite impression of it (as far as racism and "not being well recieved")
Being a "caucasion" that grew up in SA in a predominantly hispanic neighborhood I'm telling you that chances are you are going to be fine as are your kids, and the worst you might get called is "guero" which is not even a bad word
