Default NISD Kindergarten Round-up

We are in the process of relocating to the San Antonio area, but have not yet purchased a home. I noticed on the NISD website that kindergarten round-up is this week, April 7-11, 2008. This link News : Kindergarten Round-Up is April 7-11 : Northside Independent School District - San Antonio, TX 78238 suggests that they are expecting 6800 incoming kindergarteners, so parents should register early to ensure that their child may attend the neighborhood school (classrooms are capped at 22 children).

We will have an incoming kindergartner and incoming 2nd grader this fall. Do any of you know which NISD elementary schools are typically capped? I imagine we will not be eligible to register our children for school until possibly August (once we have hopefully established residency). Any advice, tips or suggestions that anyone could offer about registering for elementary school in the NISD or Boerne ISD for fall 2008 would be greatly appreciated, even if we end up trying to register at a capped school! I'm feeling nervous that my children may end up at two different elementary schools! Thanks in advance for any insight!

If I were you I'd call the schools in the district you are looking in. I know when we registered our dd in kinder last year they filled up in 3 hours. 9 kinder class rooms and it only took 3 hours, it was a mad house. Your kids may end up going to 2 different schools but it depends on where you are moving to.

I know when NISD and your kinder kid may end up going to a different school the sibling can go to that other school also so you don't have to be at 2 schools at the same time. Have not heard about any of the Boerne schools being capped.

Default I feel your pain!

We moved here on Halloween this year and the school capping situation made it tough to decide where to live. Ultimately, we decided to rent for a year and the kiddos (2nd and 5th grade) go to Aue Elem.-one of NISD's new schools. The kids have had a great experience at Aue and I would recommend it to anyone. I know they are not even close to full but I called ahead before we signed a lease agreement to make sure they had room for both. There are three new elementary schools opening for fall '08 in NISD, so I would think the capping situation should be much better this year. I am a teacher by profession and have been working in the Boerne ISD. I don't believe any of their schools are capped right now and Cibolo Creek Elem. (the new school) is not close to full. The Stone Oak area is another story. There are three schools capped currently but no new schools opening this year. You might need to keep both eyes on that situation-I would definitely call. There are lots of nice areas here and many quality schools. Welcome to Texas!

NISD is changing quite a few attendance areas before next year. This is likely to be the norm for a while as the district has to add the equivalent of 1 classroom per day to keep up with growth. I heard their spokesman say on the news recently that anyone who starts in an NISD attendance area as a kindergartener should expect that their attendance area will change at least once before they graduate from high school!

my ds will be going to kindergarten this fall, our lease is up at the end of June and we're not sure where our new home will be, should I still enroll him in our neighborhood school tomorrow during round up? or should I wait till we know where we'll be living? I'd hate to have missed round up when it's always a possibility that we'll still live nearby!! any suggestions? other than calling the admins? which i'll be doing in the morning

I would sign him up where you are living right now. We are in the same boat-we are renting but will buy a home by the end of summer. The elementary school my kids attend told us to treat it as if we are staying in the same schools and we can always change it later. It's not like you lose any money-and numbers of children enrolling are always fluid. Schools know that some people will have unexpected life changes. You would kick yourself if you didn't sign him up and they capped the school!
