Small Movie Theatres
Does anyone know of any movie theatres that show (exclusively) limited released movies? If anyone has ever been to the Angelika in Houston, that is kind of what I mean. What about any theatres that show older movies, from the '50s or '60s?

You'd probably like the Bijou at Crossroads. They do indies, and foreign films. Plus you can grab a bite to eat during the movie.

It is a PG-13 movie, but they didn't allow kids because of the stuff like beer, which was cool.

An Angelika-brand for SA is unlikely, as it's only in NYC and North Texas. Great chain of theaters that show some truly indie films.
The problem with Bijou and The Drafthouse is that they eventually get away from their 'indie' roots by showing things like Pirates of the Caribbean and more mainstream fare. If I had wanted that, I'd simply go to one of Santikos's massive multiplexes and deal with that mess.
What SA needs is a premium-seating theater (ala The ArcLight in LA), where you can reserve your exact seat online and know that only premium, interesting films will be shown. In addition, bringing back a system of ushers who would have the ability to throw out the unruly would be fantastic. I rarely go to the theater anymore, thanks to people who would rather txt message than watch what's onscreen.
It's all become so incredibly tactless and rude. All at inflated prices.

The Bijou is it, I think. Alamo Drafthouse has some unique events sometimes, but doesn't cater to indie films much. The Bijou has limited run films that aren't shown anywhere else in town. I don't begrudge them the occasional mass-market film, as that helps pay the bills and keep them around. Right before the Oscars they were showing a collection of nominated short films - that's pretty cool.
The AMC on I-10 will usually have films that are in limited release, but are still mainstream.

It only shows movies like Pirates on occasion because they make money. Most "art-house" movies don't bring in many viewers, so no theater can survive off of just those. In fact their low 3 of people who come and see them is why most big theaters stay away from such movies.
So don't complain about seeing Pirates there. It helps keep a very nice theater in business.

Blah, blah, blah. You don't travel to major cities often, do you?
True art-house cinemas do QUITE well and don't need to show the usual fare to keep the money coming in. Angelika, Magnolia, ArcLight and smaller theaters all do well without having to cater to the mainstream clientele, offering fantastic films, as well as after-movie Q&A's with the creative teams behind them.
Contrary to your belief, a movie house does not need Johnny Depp's latest Disney effort. It's simply San Antonio that needs a different frame of reference...
I'm sure it'll happen. Just not tomorrow

I like when they show some main stream movies because it still is not as crowed as that damn Palladium.
AMC select and Regal's Fiesta on De Zavala show quite a few indies.
