Those smaller towns that you mentioned also are not towns away from the city all of them except Bulverde have the city or other towns that butt up to them and besides the sign that tells you in the town and maybe loits sizes you would never know that you left SA.

If you want clean air try Wilson County. It's about 30 miles away from SA, but really clean. The two spots to watch out for in Wilson are the power plant at Lake Calveras (coal is dangerous for 15 miles) and the reopening petroleum processing operation in Nixon. I'd give that a 15 mile distance as well to be safe. I believe the winds here prevail from the south and east primarily. Check that though, I could be wrong. The rest of the county is bucolic and pristine. I have some respiratory issues, so I looked into it before picking Wilson County. Floresville is a nice larger community. La Vernia is great, Stockdale is a little further off, but totally unspoiled. I don't know if Seguin is Wilson County, but I like it. I don't think the air is as clean as other areas, but it's more built-up. I always feel a little ill once I get inside the SA city limits, and I don't get that when I visit Seguin. 1stclassflyer is 100% right to tell you that allergic people can have a rough time here. Cedar pollen, etc. can wreak havoc with some peoples' system.

Good luck with your search. I think this part of the country is really terrific.

Air pollution doesn't respect political boundries. The air quality across the whole metro area will generally be about the same, although downwind areas will have higher pollution levels than upwind areas. But that will vary based on the wind.

San Antonio is borderline in compliance with current federal standards for ozone pollution (aka smog). With the proposed new standards, we will fall into non-attainment (along with pretty much every urban area in the US). Allergens are pretty signficant here, but are seasonal.
