Default SA: Big City, Small Town Feel?

Many of the people that I have spoken too since I have been here have made a similar remark repeatedly about San Antonio: San Antonio is a big city with a small town feel.

My question to the natives is what makes San Antonio feel like a small town to you, if at all? I am just curious since to me San Antonio seems so big still.

BTW: Apart from the overwhelming traffic/highway system we have enjoyed it here so far.

Honestly for me I think it really depends on what side of town you live on. For instance I live in Alamo Heights but work torwards the medical center both area's have different speeds. I know in Alamo Heights the pace just seems to be really easy but as soon as you hit 410 and begin making your way torwards the northwest side the pace seems to pick up.

To me, it is the way how San Antonio celebrates. Be it Fiesta San Antonio, Folklife Festival, or any of the other events throughout the year. These don't compare to Macy's Thanksgiving Parade or the Rose Parade; however, you get a more personal feeling during the events here.

BTW: Here is a link to San Antonio events for 2007:

To me, it's because the neighborhoods are so spread out. My yard stick is Chicago, where the lots/houses are very narrow and very close together. San Antonio has much more of a suburban feel with large yards and lots, even close to downtown. That, and the friendliness and hospitality of most of the folks in San Antonio.
