Question Fire ants?

When I lived in Houston a few years back, fire ants were a big issue in our area. Are they as prevalant in SA as they are in Houston?

I don't know if they are "as prevalent" but we certainly have our share!

I haven't seen nearly as many here as I have in Houston or Dallas. They are definitely around, but we're not battling three mounds in our yard all the time...

Good to know! We ALWAYS had mounds unless we kept amdro on the yard at all times & that gets pretty spendy!

Speaking of Amdro.....does anyone else have a problem KEEPING it on the yard once applied? We can't keep the birds from eating it every time we put it down.....so we never get our ant problem solved! Argh&*^% Any suggestions? (Stepped in a mound last week....not a fun experience!)

You could switch to Spinosad. It's an organic fire-ant killer and AFAIK doesn't appeal to birds.

I don't get a lot of Fire Ants in my yard but occasionally I will find a bed. Someone once told me that if I put some Cinnamon on the bed that they would go away because Fire Ants do not like Cinnamon. A few months later I discovered a bed and remembering what I had been told I sprinkled a little Cinnamon on the bed. I checked it a few days later and they were gone. I don't know where they went but I didn't see another bed in the yard so if they just moved, which I assume they did, they moved out of my yard. Try it and see if it works for you. It's not very spendy!

That's pretty much waht i have to do as well. When I fertilize the yards in the spring and the fall, i also throw down some ant killer. I believe it's a must here.

We always have mounds, esp. after a good rain.

I believe you've found another beneficial use for cinnamon! Good for humans, bad for fire ants! I've never seen a fire ant I didn't want dead.
