Dear all

What would be the closet commute for BAMC employees in San Anotnio, TX?

What’s your budget? What are your priorities? Schools? Shopping? Outdoors?

Libraries, restaurants. Prefer within 10 min drive to BAMC. The housing on JBSA base seems expensive $1600/month.

787209 and 78218 should fit.

Some driving considerations: The west side of the base is more convenient for the city center, but there are fewer entry gates to the Post. On the east side of the base near the hospital, expect slow traffic if you need to use I-35 & Loop 410 during regular commute hours.
Concur with the 78209 and 78218 general areas. I don't know if there's housing on base for civilians, but it would be pretty nice from the personal safety viewpoint (although pretty boring for local non-military social exposure and activities) IMO.

Housing on JBSA is expensive; $1600/ 2 bdrm. Not sure if it would be worth it If there is commute from JBSA to BAMC, I will go for it. Thank u very much for ur response.

Oops. There are 3 separate "JBSA" military bases. I thought you meant living on JBSA-Fort Sam Houston which is where BAMC (hospital) is located. If you had to commute from JBSA-Lackland, that changes the cost-benefit ratio of paying $1600 to live on a military base. Also, I have no way of knowing if Lackland is as overwhelmingly safe as Fort Sam Houston. I should add, I hope you're not counting on guaranteed promotions and sizable raises working for the Army (I don't mean that in a negative way, just a practical budgetary reality for many of the essential positions). Good luck finding somewhere to settle!

I'm guessing Lackland is as safe as Fort Sam, but Fort Sam is in a much more interesting location.

I'm also a Bamc employee/contractor and looking at both Highland Hill and Highland Park area which look really nice. Both along I37 and 90 which gives straight access to I35, and there is WW White not too far off which empties onto I35 access road shortly before the intersection for a front gate for Bamc. Is the commute from those areas bearable? I work over night shift by the way.
