New here, had a question about Alamo Heights
Hello,
I am new to the boards but not new to San Antonio. I just had a question about the Alamo Heights area. We now live in the North Central area and love our child's school and the rental house we are in, but our landlord is getting ready to up our rent by $250 when our lease ends. This is something we really can't afford. We were looking around on Craiglslist and found a rental home in Alamo Heights for only $800 per month ! This is really surprising because I've heard that AH could be pretty pricey. So now I am wondering about the neighborhood. The home is off of Rexford Drive. All I know about it is that it's kind of close to North Star Mall but nothing else. Just wondering is anyone had any idea about this neighborhood and would it be worth checking out?
We are currently paying $1200 per month, which will be going up at the end of the month, so this would definitely save us a tremendous amount of money, but at that price I just wonder a bit... thanks all in advance !~

Rexford Drive is technically not in Alamo Heights, although part of the neighborhood east of Jones Maltsberger is in AHISD. The neighborhood is a little pocket of 1960s/1970s era working-class homes bounded by 281 to the east, Olmos Park/Olmos Basin to the south and McCullough/North Star Mall on the west. It can be a mixed bag as far as neighbors go, although it's always seemed like a solid, quiet middle-class/working-class area. It would certainly be far more affordable than living in AH proper, although if you are concerned about prestige then this is probably not the neighborhood for you. Still, AH schools for $800/month is certainly not bad! Drive the neighborhood and see what kind of vibe you get.

Thanks for the tips ! Yeah, that is definitely a big savings we would have for sure, and we aren't really into being too prestige, but we do want to be in a safe neighborhood. The one thing that really concerns me though is the part about it possibly not being in AHISD. Now, the landlord said he thought that it was, but I've also heard there is a school close by called Ridgeview that should be avoided at all costs. I found out the zip code too is 78209.

You can check this page:
Alamo Heights ISD District Map it has both a map of the district and list of acceptable addresses.
Any house that is in the 500-900 blocks of Rexford Dr is in the AH school district.

I've always had a good rule of thumb about knowing when you're actually in Alamo Heights...
If you can smell the curry from Mon's Thai Bistro, then you're where you want to be.
