Bakeries
I am looking for a bakery to do my son's birthday cake. I live in the Stone Oak area and I am trying to decide between The Cake Shop, Nadler's, Elms Bake Shop or jus using HEB at 1604/Blanco. I want the cake to be good and it would be a special order cake.
Any experiences, recommendations, advice, etc.?

I love Nadlers, but it is expensive! Ok, there is a bakery off De Zavala road across from Clark HS. I cannot remember the name for the life of me - but it is AWESOME! Check it out when you can!

Sam's Club and Costco both make a better cake than HEB, IMO. The Cake Shop is excellent, but pricey.
I could never figure out when Nadler's is open. Right after they opened at Blanco/1604, every time I was in the mood for pastry I'd stop there and find them closed. After a while, I stopped trying. I think that most banks are easier to find open than Nadler's!

I second the cakes at Costco. They are great! Not a huge variety of styles, and no cartoon characters. I do not like HEB's basic cakes - at all! The specialty ones are ok - tiramisu, tuxedo, tres leches etc.

Emmas
Emmas Bakery off of Nacodogches inside of 1604 (at naco and judson) is pretty good too. My Matron of Honor got our engagement party cake there and people just raved about it.

Jenna Bush's Cake
I saw on the news last night that the Ultimate Cheesecake Bakery at 1604 and 281 made a tres leches cake for Jenna Bush's wedding and drove it up to Crawford, TX. I don't know if we are allowed to post links, but here is theirs. Looks like they have several locations.
The Ultimate Cheesecake Bakery
Otherwise, I like Costco's cakes (especially if there are alot of kids to feed) and Nadlers.

I buy cakes from Nadlers and they always get great reviews from my doctors offices. You can never go wrong with Nadlers. I've never noticed the hours but would be sure to call ahead and check. It's located at NW loop 410 off Babcock rd before you hit callaghan.
The cake shop has gorgeous cakes. They do have a huge variety of flavors so you may find something you like. They are very helpful in the bakery, you can sample different combos. Can't say much because the owners are close friends of my family so I'm partial
Another place I will order delicious cakes from is right off Bandera rd near Helotes. Cupcake Couture (aka Sprinkles & Confeddi's) they recently changed their name. YUmmy and they have a large selection.
And can't forget Costco...it's true what they say about their cakes.
Let us know how things work out! Have fun.
