It says they break gas meters, too. That probably means free gas!

It's probably just another species moving northward due to climate change.

Did you read the article? They have infested Houston and the surrounding counties. South of Houston is the Gulf of Mexico, I doubt they migrated from there....
They think the came in as stowaways on a cargo freighter into the Port of Houston.

I thought it was global cooling now. Sure has been cold over here this winter and spring, anyway.
But really, I thought people hated fire ants. Maybe these will control the population somewhat... I don't know.

These specific ants came around it looks like about 2002 or so... But ants getting into and messing up electrical equipment is nothing new. I grew up on a Farm closer to Houston well before 2002, and we always had problems with ants and large electrical equipment like water wells. They would find their way into both the motor windings, and the fuse boxes. The real problem is they would bring dirt in and build nests...

The fire ants will also go for electrical boxes. They get into the control panel of the Ac unit. They also get close to any cable or electrical transformers that are ont he ground. The crazy ants will get inside the house in addition to the outside. They will go for the electric controls under the refrigerator, the controls in the heater closet, and outlet boxes under the house or in the walls.
The crazy ants are already in New Braunfels.
The only thing that can be done is to be aware and look for them.
I was wondering why I did not have many fire ants this year. I thought it was becasue of my diligent effots to rid the yard of them. I hope I'm right. I do know I will be on the lookout for them. I hope they find a contol for them soon. We will need it.
