Hi, I'm guessing that some of you folks are retired military? If so, I would like to find out what base you advise us to request on our forms for Tricare Prime? I have to turn these in Friday.

Thank you in advance for any advice - thanks!

Btw, we will be living in the 78250 zip & I think Lackland is closest but none of the bases seem terribly far (just looking at the map).
Thanks again!

I am retired military, but I don't remember having a choice.. If I did I probably said Wilford Hall or Kelly and that's probably why I got Kelly..
have fun trying to get appointments though, it sucks..

Thanks for the info!

that stinks about appointments! that happened for a while here (NJ) but it's gotten a LOT better lately. Are all the bases like that in SA?

Do they have after hours clinics available?

Thanks again for the info.

they have ER's that are 24/7
the main clinics run somewhere around 0700-1600ish or something like that. The Tricare office here is in Wilford Hall. There might be another one, but the only one I know is there.
Also, everything is in transition, so this could all change. Wilford Hall is becoming San Antonio Medical Center South or something like that and BAMC is going to be San Antonio Medical Center North or something like that..

Wow.... I was always under the impression that if you're RETIRED military, you aren't bound to military facilities, but rather, the coverage becomes more like a PPO, and you have a list of preferred providers, or 'participating' providers.....
You guys always have to visit military facilities to get healthcare? And your spouses and any age-eligible children??? Wow.... you'd think they'd WANT you to go elsewhere, freeing up the military providers and facilities......

I thing you have to get permission to visit approved off-base providers. Last time I heard was that you pay 25% of the cost. And as rd2007 says, it is VERY hard to get a regular appointment (I've been trying for several months now with no luck). Now, if you have to see specialists (i.e., heart), then you get assigned from Kelly to Lackland and you're In Like Flint.

you can choose the other Tricare and select your own provider, but you have to pay for a portion of it. If you go to a military facility it's no charge (except the annual $400 and whatever we pay). I think appointments are hard to get for everyone and they need to extend their calendars or something and it is the first appointment that is hard to get. After you get to a specialist it's easy to get appointments and sometimes you get lucky and get one that day.

Hi, as one of 'us' is a recent retiree I can tell you that as of the last few months all retirees and family are sent to off base providers for PCM, I have a great Doc and am very happy with being out of the system. I have had only two referrals for specialty get sent back to BAMC, one of those I am going to ask for a release. If I choose to continue that course of care. Even the retiree is sent off base for primary care, due to the lack of space at WH & BAMC.

When you go to initiate your tricare coverage I have one FYI, if you pay by credit card they will run it as a cash advance! That was not in the small print on my form, got it online.

if you want my doc's name please feel free to send me a DM!

I paid on-line via credit card last year and they did not treat it as a cash advance.

BTW: What percentage do you have to pay for your off-base health care?
