Before moving from San Antonio, I lived in Oakwell Farms and loved it there. There was some property crime, but I don't think you'll ever find a crime-free area.
I don't think the southside has seen a drastic increase in crime. My parents and kids all live on the southside, so I'm pretty current on what's going on there.

Regarding the Crime tables:
I remember working with a guy in my office that lived on the South side. Everybody expressed dismay at his cavalier attitude toward living there. He asked all of us to consider if we were to break into a house or a car, what area of town would we want to do it in. That pretty much shut us all up.

I've lived in SA for 2 years now, in the Cambridge subdivision near Babcock and Hausman. We never had any issues, until one month ago my 1999 Honda Civic was broken into, for the first time EVER (I've had that car 7 years). The thieves managed to open the hood, disconnected the battery which deactivated my car alarm, opened my door (they were at least nice and didn't bust out my window), ripped out my cheap stereo (wife left the face in the glove compartment!), then they managed to open my trunk which was locked from the inside (it had taken a locksmith one hour once to get in there), and stole an old Sony DVD player which did not work (we were going to toss it).
There was a rash of car windows shot out a month before that. My house backs up to a field, and I have an alarm. Two years and we feel relatively safe over here, just the car being broken into incident. I'm getting one of those hood locks and reminding my wife to put the face of the CD player in the house!

Just be sure to lock your car in the garage if you value your windsheild and tires.

The further south you go the less crime Probably. The further east you go the less crime???? We'd be glad to help. Who's we?? The further north or east from where?? If you get lucky, you find a temporary safe haven. I wouldn't be feeling overly safe because I live in...say..La Cantera or Stone Oak!! It's all around us. Do you think criminals try to avoid affluent neighborhoods? You're smack dab in the middle of the crosshairs. No sense pretending to know the safest areas or most crime free. Your perceptions are probably illusions! What's my point? I live smack in the middle of the southside and feel perfectly safe. Maybe someone from the northside wouldn't. I'm done!

I lived in the southside for a huge part of my life. The only burglaries to our home was by a drug-addicted cousin back in the late 60's, unfortunately. Other than that our home was safe. For some bizarre reason folks tend to think as the near west, eastside and southside as virtual war zones. Take a drive out of your comfort zone sometime and see for yourselves.
