San Antonio has 2 million people. If they can support the spurs why can not they support another sports team. Smaller cities like Denver have more sports teams then San Antonio.

Everywhere is Cowboy country they are America's team, if other markets always said well we can't get a team because we are "cowboys" or "Astro" country then no one would ever get a team. California has numerous teams in the same league that never stopped them and they weren't always the larger TV market they are today.Guerilla south texas that is supposed to be Cowboy country is trying to get there own football team.

Saints' departure aids Valley's NFL team bid
Border football group touts international appeal
San Antonio Business Journal - January 13, 2006
by W. Scott Bailey

When Saints owner Tom Benson, with a strong push from the NFL, agreed to march his team back to New Orleans, it sent some San Antonio leaders scrambling for answers and a new game plan.

And it prompted former South Texas broadcasting mogul McHenry T. Tichenor Sr. to expedite his pursuit of an NFL team for a more southern point in Texas -- the Rio Grande Valley/Northern Mexico region.

Tichenor has teamed up with business leaders in deep South Texas and across the border. He is soliciting support for an NFL franchise that would play its home games in Texas but represent Mexico, too.

Tichenor tells the Business Journal that, having completed "several more steps, we hope to file (an NFL franchise application) in the first quarter of 2006."

The Tichenor family merged its Tichenor Media System with Heftel Broadcasting several years ago, creating the Hispanic Broadcasting Corp. In 2003, the Federal Communications Commission cleared the way for a multibillion-dollar merger of Hispanic Broadcasting with Univision.

Those moves paid off for the Tichenor family. And now, partly as a gesture of thanks, the senior Tichenor is working to bring the NFL to the same border region where his family enjoyed such success in business.

The plan, according to Tichenor, includes the construction of a new football stadium along the Texas side of the U.S./Mexico border. It was unclear at press time who would finance such a venue. But Tichenor does say it would likely be situated somewhere between Brownsville and McAllen, which border the Mexican cities of Matamoras and Reynosa, respectively.

Denver has a larger MSA than San Antonio.

2 million for SA and 2.3 million for Denver.

However, at just 2.3 million Denver has NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL teams.

And how long have those teams been there? You have to look at that. The Broncos have been there since the AFL days. The Nuggets were a ABA team before the NBA picked them up.

Reggie Bush is nothing more than a Brian Westbrook....lucky if he gets that. He is a great slot receiver, though, but a decent (at best) running back.

Ok, so now it's about seniority? What's all the talk about population? Shouldn't the fact that those teams have been there that long disspell the "population size" matters myth??

Seniority and population size. You don't see the Green Bay Packers considering moving to a larger market do you?

It's not just population, and the discussion would move forward if that is understood. Denver is the No. 18 TV market and a regional powerhouse. Kansas City is No. 31. The only market smaller than San Antonio that has two of the major three sports is New Orleans, and the second team (NBA) plays most of its games in Oklahoma City. No stand-alone market smaller than No. 33 Cincinnati has a major-league baseball team, and there's no way that city gets a team in this environment. Having a century-old fan base does make a difference. Baseball markets need thousands of commited, well-off fans each night, and San Antonio, at this point, doesn't have either. The NFL is not going to add Austin to the market, because that's a separate TV base. The lower per-capita income and lack of several corporate headquarters (AT&T is busy with the Spurs) to support a second team also make a difference.

At&t isn't a small company and they aren't the only large company in town. We have plenty of large, medium, and small companies way more than New Orleans before and defiently after katrina. Also when the saints where in town, as well when the Marlins were considering SA, we had plenty companies from SA and a few from Austin interested in being apart of another pro team. Not everyone is about basketball some sponsors would rather spend money on football. I don't think SA should give up hope. Austin I also think should and will play a big part in this whole matter because not everyone is big into college sports. I guess only time will tell what will happen. I think alot of people overlook SA, baseball I think was a big stretch but football isn't.

San Antonio has three more companies in the FORTUNE 1000 list than New Orleans.
