Hello,

I have an opportunity to convert from a contractor to a full time at USAA in their IT sector. I already did a background check when I joined them as a contractor a few years back.

1. Will there be another check when I convert to full time?
2. I was charged with a misdemeanor but it was dismissed and has been granted expunction. It will take another couple months for record to be expunged. Once a record is expunged, I can legally say I was not arrested (that's what my lawyer told me). The application form for conversion does not ask anything about charges though. Will this show up and create any problem if there is a check?

Thanks in advance

I cant tell you if there will be another background check. What I can tell you though is to not lie about it.

Sure, I do not want to lie but there is no section that asks me about this in the application. Since it's conversion to full time, the application only asks basic questions and a resume. I can answer if asked. Would they ask me if it showed up in background and give me a chance to explain the dismissed/expunged record?

If it's something they don't ask about, you can't answer. Zip the lip, answer all questions they DO ask truthfully, then address it if it comes up. I can tell you that minor offenses never bothered me as long as the applicant was upfront if he/she WAS asked about it. From what I've heard about USAA, they're pretty lenient, especially on older, ininor things.

Based on USAA's recent (ongoing) rating downgrade, I bet they're going to have a much tougher time attracting top-tier talent.

If applying to and being accepted a federal job - the Background asks "in last 7 years" regarding misdemeanors.

Thanks. Mine was before 2 years but was a misdemeanor B. I just don't want them to think I hid it as there is no question about it. I hope they ask me when it comes on the background and I can provide the reasoning.

Does working in the IT sector of USAA considered a federal job? Or would it be only if you work on the bank or insurance side?
