Default Best Subdivision Near Fort Sam San Antonio

I just joined this forum because the people are so helpful, and yes I need some help. My family and I will be relocating from Wichita Falls, TX to Fort Sam in July 2009 and are actively looking for a good place to live that is close to Fort Sam. We have visited a few times and were very discouraged by the traffic jams at all times of the day. We want a large house (3K sq ft) in the 200 - 250K range and a good school district. Right now we are leaning towards Auburn Hills at Woodcrest, but there must be other areas out there that are close to the base and a great place to live. Please help me if you can.

I would look at the Legacy homes subdivision called Winnbrook Estates. Much closer to Ft. Sam. It's in the city of Windcrest. You still have the great NEISD schools, except you get Windcrest Elementary. They offer homes at 3100 sq. ft starting at 204k.

Thumbs down Legacy Homes? think again.

[FONT=Times New Roman]When we purchased our dream home, that would be the last one, or so we thought. we were lied to, told the home was ready 6 months early only to have my wife quit her hob, take children out of school, sell other home entirely to cheaply, to arrive and find the home didn't even have a driveway poured, or flooring! Legacy Homes moved us in 6 months prior to closing on the home, no survey was done until recently (we closed July 2006). We have had to fill out numerous service order requests only to get little or nothing done, our ceiling has caved in for the 3rd time; one realtor dropped us because it could not sell. Our home based business fell through because our entire inventory was ruined with the downpour of rain (which we financed with a HELOC, now my wife is back to work, as usual trying to make ends meet, our living room walls are so badly warped that the builder sent workers who speak no English over with a hatchet to hack away at the stud until it allowed them to stick new dry wall over it. Air handler room has no drywall in it whatsoever, opens directly up to attic (which leaks and has started rotting the particle board flooring that the furnace is sitting on. We feel badly taken advantage of. We have neighbors in the neighborhood who are not African American and have had their problems fixed. I am wondering if it is discrimination? I don't care where a person lives; no one should have to turn on their master bathroom shower with a pair of vice grips, especially not in a $400.00 home in the "prestigious" Stone Oak subdivision of San Antonio! What do you think? I have filed BBB and FTC complaints and now finally builder just shows up at my door demanding a list of things to be repaired after 2 years off trying to get someone to fix our home. Legacy Homes has ruined our lives now we want them to do the right thing and just buy it back because we cannot, in good conscience sell it to another family knowing all the structural defects. I am a veteran and would never recommend another veteran to purchase a home from Legacy-Meritage Homes and I would sing this from the highest mountain top![/FONT]

Bel Meade. It's a small enclave directly behind Fort Sam, mainly 40's-50's ranches - 250K might be tough though for a house that large in BM (and most homes here are about that size) as it's becoming really popular with the new Fort Sam relocatees. My neighbor just sold his house for 375K in this real estate climate (it's about 3,000 sq. ft.) - I was shocked! BUT, you never can tell, deals do pop up.

Second choice would be Northwood, you can easily find a really nice pad for 250K there, and it's really close to Fort Sam.

Avoid all that new crud, buy established, after 40-50 years if a neigborhood is still really desirable and well maintained, that's a pretty good sign.

New builds are dicey, who knows what they'll be like in five-ten plus years (Stone Oak is the perfect example of this, already getting junky IMHO).
