Demolition of old Lack's building downtown
Yesterday they started the demolition of the old 4-story Lack's at San Pedro just inside the downtown loop (I-35) close to the Main Library. This is the building that, a couple years ago, an artist pasted a bunch of logos on the metal skinned front (I thought it actually was pretty cool looking). Last week they tore down an old (early 1900's) one story building which was adjacent to it.
I have looked at some previous HDRC agendas, but I didn't see anything referring to this building.
Anybody know what is planned for the site? They just built a Capitol One branch across the street, and there is a Walgreens about a mile down San Pedro along with every fast food burger joint known to man. The site has great access, but doesn't make sense as a condo project or hotel. Downtown also has plenty of vacant office space. I just can't figure out what might be built there. Any ideas?

Maybe they were structurally unsound. I've seen buildings go *real* fast when the foundation takes a sudden turn in a bad way.

It seems SA is bulldozer happy lately. there was an article on this in the SA Current dated 4/30 titled "Sound of the Wrecking Ball". I'm not sure if I am allowed to link to the article here but you can go to the SA Current website and find it quite easily. Raises a few eyebrows. Call me skeptical but I wonder about motive.. if a property is sought after by a developer with money then it seems more likely to be razed. Just me being paranoid though perhaps.

The building had a for sale sign (it can be seen on Google StreetView). The contact # was 210-824-9080 if anyone is curious to call and find out. Also, sametro.org (former member 210's development-tracking website) lists a mixed-use development going in at/near the site.

SA IS bulldozer-happy. It's a shame too because those old buildings are what make SA what it is. New buildings look like eye sores in contrast.
There is profit in destroying buildings, moreso than leaving them alone. When a new building is built, it puts more people to work and raises more money than leaving the old building it replaced alone. Economically, it is a good idea to destroy old buildings whenever possible because of it.

Here is your answer:
MySA.com: Metro | State
IMO the building wasn't historic nor significant. It was an eyesore and a breeding ground for danger.
