Medina, because it's so close to us. We go to the RV resort up there all the time. Love it. It's pretty, lots of tress, has a pool and the owners are as nice as it gets.

Canyon Lake-it's the only one I'm familiar with, been going many many years. We actually prefer the coast, but with gas prices, will have to do a couple lake trips. We like Comal Park (on west end-away from the dam) It sits kinda high overlooking lake, good swimming area, and we bbq.

Has anyone been to Choke Canyon? I know it's not exactly close by.

Medina is my favorite. It is a beautiful lake and not too far from home. However, the public use facilities are pretty limited.

Canyon lake is also very nice and I use the Randolph AFB rec area to launch my boat.

Both lakes get way too busy on the weekends during the warm months. I usually only take my boat out on weekdays and sometimes I almost have the lake to myself.

I also go to Lake Calaveras because the fishing there is very good. However, it's not much to look at and definitely not a lake I'd swim in.

I like Canyon, Choke, and Medina. Calaveras and Braunig are good fishing lakes, and about 30 minutes from me. Medina is close too. We were just camping at Choke a few weeks ago.

I agree with ChrisSA, I wouldn't swim in Calaveras or Braunig!!

Here are the links to info pages on the Texas Parks and Wildlife page - definitely do some googling and find the private parks, etc...

Choke Canyon

Calaveras

Braunig

Canyon Lake

Medina

Does the swimming area have a nice "beach" area at Comal Park? Are there real restrooms there?

Yes, Greg and Gina are very nice (I think that is who you are talking about). That is a nice park too.

Others, stay away from Medina Lake. It is dirty, overcrowded, stinky, and the people are VERY rude!!

Aren't there gators at Choke?

I just went to Braunig this past weekend and we caught a ton of fish, nothing big enough to keep though. Either ways, was a blast.

We're planning to go to either Somerville or Buchanan next.

Anyone been fishing at Medina? Heard there's not a lot of public places there to fish off the banks. And if so, how was the fishing?
