Any ideas of what to do with 2 dogs
My neighbor agreed to watch two dogs (I don't know what they are, I think she said poodles) for another neighbor who moved. He was supposed to come back after a few weeks. Well, fast forward, it has been almost 6 months. They are outside, unshaved and it is really hot. She can't be caring for them. She just turned 92 two days ago. You know the elderly live on a fixed income and she is having a hard time to just getting out to water and feed, especially in this heat.
I told her I would help find the appropriate place, but don't want to send them to the shelter to be euthanized.
Any resources you can point me towards. I don't even know where to lookfor a rescue.

That's so awful. There are some no-kill shelters in SA but it is hard to get them in (always full). If they are poodles, someone will want them. Clean them up and put them on craigslist or the SA Express. But please have them fixed first (if they aren't already). There are so many people out there who would breed them irresponsibly.
Also, since the nieghbor is 92 and was doing a nice thing, it sounds like a heartwarming news story. I suggest calling some of the local stations to see if they would air the story.
Good luck

Also check with the local vets. They can help.

If you go to the petfinder's website (petfinder.org) and click on Animal Shelters, then type in San Antonio, TX, you will get a list. You can call and ask them if they are no-kill.
As a last resort (very last resort), going to the pound might not be such an awful option. They are trying to do more adoptions there. And if the dogs are languishing in heat outside all day where they may or may not get food or water, and no vet care at all I'm assuming. Then being quickly and humanely euthanised might be better than what they have right now.
If they are outside all day and they aren't getting heartworm preventative, they probably have heartworms already - which is a very slow killer if not treated.
Also, if poodles are not trimmed, their hair continues to grow and can be very painful when it gets matted and/or bunched up. I have seen dogs who have been neglected so bad that their poop doesn't even come out because their little butholes are all matted over.

You'll have to find out whether she's willing to give them up before you do anything.

That is so sad that somebody would do that. How irresponsible! That was a good suggestion to maybe call a local station & see if they will air it. There must be some type of Poodle Rescue foundation in San Antonio. Good luck.

I can almost guarantee you that if they're poodles a poodle rescue will help. Are they big or small? Small dogs find homes QUICK.

Go get them, put them in your car and drive them to the Humane Society. I used to work there and saw this done all the time--even though people calling in would be told the shelter was full, if someone walked in, they'd take the animals right then and there. And if you explain to them the situation, I am SURE they will help. There was one situation while I worked there: an elderly man who owned 2 standard poodles passed away...but about the last couple years the dogs remained outside and didn't get the grooming (and other care besides having food thrown outside to them) they needed--they looked absolutely HORRIBLE. When the man passed away, I think it was his sister and her husband that came to settle the estate and contacted the HS about the situation. No questions asked the HS took the dogs, shaved them, treated them and I believe they ended up getting adopted and going to another state clear across the country. The Humane Society will not allow someone to adopt them and take them home without first having them spayed or neutered.

well, after we found out about this yesterday, my boys have been over twice to feed and water. They are very hairy and they are poodles. They were inside dogs up until this incident. I wish I would have known earlier.
