my parents are just about ready to rent out 3 bedrooms in our house, and they were wondering if they needed a permit from the city. anyone know?

The city does have regulations about how many unrelated people can live in a residence designed for single family habitation. If this is a single family home in a residential neighborhood it's probably against city code.

If youre going to do all that, be careful, cause you hit state stuff too, and you have to pay the taxes too. best to keep it on the low down. It will end up costing you more than you make if you dont.

Called Zoning. Normally it is not allowed in single family zoned areas but you best check with your city.

Also, it may be against the neighborhood's deed restrictions (if they have them.)

You can seriously lose your homestead exemption and any elderly exemptions that you have on your property tax. Better check this out carefully.
