My parents still talk about eating at Herbert's when they were at Southwest Texas!! I graduated from SWT in 2003, and we still go to San Marcos just to eat at Garcia's. It is our favorite spot up there.

So many people have mentioned Mamacita's, but does anyone think their food is bland? We go there because we LOVE their green sauce, but otherwise we aren't too impressed.

Anyone from Pasadena or Deer Park, Texas? There is a restaurant there called Don'Key, pronounced Donkey, and it is the BEST Mexican food you will ever eat. They have the original green sauce! Never a bad day there, and I have been eating there since I was in the womb.

My daughter says the same thing about Mamacita's. I have never ordered their enchiladas but my daughter said they were gross. I usually order the chili relleno (sp??), it is the best I have found (so far). Also, I order the fried shrimp, OMG!! those are GREAT (IMO).

We are a vegetarian family from California and find it hard to get Mexican food here that isn't cooked in a crap load of lard!
I've found some that are willing to work with us on the menu and that is:

La Haceinda De Los Barrios
Mamacitas (I guess I like bland Mexican food from what some of you have commented).
Adelantes
Rio Rio

Haven't tried Aldacos in Stone Oak but want to.
Looking forward to trying the new Mi Tierra coming soon to Huebner/1604.

If it's the same Mi Tierra as downtown, you probably won't find any less lard.

My brother-in-law is a vegetarian and he finds some good selections at Chuy's. He said they're one of the only mexican food restaurants that doesn't use lard in their beans.

Have you ever tried SalsaMora'a restaurant on the south side of S.A.? I believe it is on pleasington road. They cook mexican food in a healthy way without any excess or unnessary fats. I heard it was delicious. For just good ol' regular mexican food, try Torres Taco Haven in SouthTown, or Patty's on Hackberry(only open till 3:00)
