Default Man Falls Off Cliff at OP Schnabel Park

OMG, there's a 25 foot cliff back in there? Must be, a guy fell off it today, but I didn't know. I guess I've never been in there very far, come to think of it. They airlifed him out, so hopefully he will be OK. 25 feet is quite a fall.

Yeah, I think it is (was?) fenced. I've only been to that park once and didn't venture to that area but my older son along with my friend's older child went walking and told us about the cliff. Said it was "freaky". Scary!

no, unfortunately, it's not fenced --- dh says that there is a small section that has some old fence posts up but you can easily walk around them --- dh says there is also a section that the park police call the goat trails where if you don't know where you are going and you don't have good footing you can easily fall off ---

I run there everyday and there are tons of trails that have really scary drops. I don't recommend running the off road trails alone there.

I've hiked there quite often in the past but I quit going because I got tired of seeing all the trash left behind and because the taggers were leaving there mark which I really hated to see. There are some cliffs that are higher than 25 feet and I can see how somebody could get hurt there quite easily if they weren't familiar with the place.

I now go to Crown-ridge, Government Canyon, Frederick, or Eisenhauer when I want to hike somewhere close to town. They are all very well kept and no trash or taggers.

Leave the black top and go down below. The place is really beautiful and is just about the best mountain biking place inside of 1604. But I just wish people would respect it. If you go down below you'll see what I am talking about. Beautiful cliffs, great hiking, pointless graffiti, and people who can't clean up after themselves. I also bet it has the most deer out of anyplace inside of 1604.

Chris

I'm with ya, I used to bike down there a lot the last time we lived here (before Govt Canyon opened up). Even the trails at the top of the park can be fun, but the real adventure begins once you drop into the creek area. I haven't been there in quite a few years, but it is a shame that anyone would deface a public park. I can't understand why a few people abuse what has been given to everyone to enjoy...

Cheers! M2

Default Please be careful

My children and I have hiked these trails for many years.

Today, one of my older son's classmates has died from a fall from these cliffs. There has been little news coverage, so I want to try and get the word out any way I can. PLEASE BE CAREFUL on these cliffs and trails. It is a beautiful park and we are lucky to have it, but please use caution!!!!
