Default Oil Changes and Recycling

With oil now edging up to $140 a barrel, I thought it a good idea to discuss a few things additional things we can do to help the impact on us all.

For one, anyone who believes they have to change the oil in their car every 3000 miles needs to educate themselves on the modern petroleum products that don't require as frequent of changing. There recently was a good article on the subject that is worth reading:

The 3,000 Mile Oil Change Myth

Secondly, when you do change your oil, I hope everyone is taking it to a local recycling center and not just throwing it out in the containers (which is bad!) or pouring it out somewhere (which is even worse!). The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has an excellent web site on used oil recycling. Additionally, Earth911.org has even more helpful hints, to include a list of recycling programs in Texas.

Oil is an expensive and limited commodity, use it wisely!

Cheers! M2

I just read this online as well. Makes me happy cause I've been trying to tell hubby this for a while now. He's the one who runs in to change it at 2,999...

For locations to recycle oil and automotive parts, see the San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department web site. There are other options, talked about in this thread: Oil Recycling?
