In case you lose track of the schedule in Sapphire's link, the city does have a handy reminder method. You'll get a doorhanger on your front doorknob the week before the next semi-annual pick up. The doorhanger's hard to miss because it's yellow and it features the phrase "It's Your Turn" in big letters.

Thanks. I was wondering if I missed the hanger thing because I've been around less than a month. Unfortunately it doesn't look like we'll get it because the neighborhood I'm in falls into the *one* hole in the map. I have no idea why; it's not a separate city like Castle Hills and the others are. It really makes no sense that the neighborhood is never on the city's trash pickup maps.

Steve, I'm fairly certain you're not in the next week or two because we are. We just got our notice yesterday, for pickup week of June 30. That's usually how they do it, about 10 days in advance, allowing you two weekends.
The last time for us was mid-December...normally it's October and we'd been waiting and waiting and had a huge pile inside the fence, waiting to be moved outside the fence. Then they gave us the notice the day my husband left town for a week, was to be back for one day then we were leaving for 2 weeks...so lucky me I had to take care of it all myself! I've been busy moving piles of brush today.

He and I both watch "If these walls could talk" together on HGTV, and he wants soooooo badly to find "stuff". We found stuff in the attic that belonged to the PO, she worked for the school system and it was just some mail from 1980 and he was thinking it was "something old and
significant". Poor baby.
I am just wondering when we'll get the new system? I'm READY. We heard about it right before we were about to go buy huge lidded cans, because the raccoons, stray dogs, cats, etc, area always turning our other cans over and tearing up the trash before it's picked up!

Just a quick thought in between moving - (AHHHHH!) back in NJ the houses can be VERY old, and I LOVED to find old things in the attic when I was a kid! (mostly old news paper) Maybe you could help him pick out some things to leave in your house for people that may live in your house YEARS from now. Sort of like a time capsule. At the very least, you'll have it for him to look at when he becomes an adult.

oooh, that reminds me (good idea by the way), we found a ton of newspaper from the 60s....wrapped around the old pipes as insulation. A lot of it was still intact and readable. Quite interesting.

New to recycling
We will be starting this new program within the next two weeks and I am very worried that we too will have your problem. We will start recycling, but I have a few questions. I saw the list, but what do you do with bottle caps? What do you do with the lids? I realize that these are very basic questions that I should know, however, I really am gung ho on trying to recycle. Does anyone have a detailed list for recycling. The City of SA lists seems kind of general. Thanks

So I had to go visit the HOA headquarters last week to let them know that the previous owners were gone, give them my name, ... (surprisingly they didn't want any $$). The conversation went like this:
HOA - Hi, I'm the manager for XXX neighborhood. I'm new here too.
Me - I've got a question about garbage collection. Why is tis neighborhood the only one in the region outside the city service map?
HOA - Idunno... there's a contract with (whoever) and it's probably because the neighborhood is gated.
Me - But there's a whole ton of gated neighborhoods around; some with a guy standing out front and the city does them.
HOA - Hmmm...??? Guess I'd better look into that.

The only time our "rubbish" container gets anywhere NEAR full is when we forget to put it out on collection day and it ends up with 2 weeks worth of stuff.

Jules, are you in the city or just have the 90 gallon can? We are out side city limits and don't have recycling yet.
