Default Observations from first time visit to San Antonio.

I have been reading quite a bit here on city data about SA since I had never been there and am relocating to SA from Charlotte, NC (by way of Pensacola, FL). Here are just a few things I want to mention and see if anyone has an feedback.

1. Taco Cabana is much better than Taco Bell. It was right on par with the best Mex restaurants we have back here.
2. Texas barbecue really isn't that good. NC style all the way.
3. SA is not as ghetto and dirty as people have said.
4. Roads suck.
5. Downtown is awesome compared to Charlotte's. While "uptown" Charlotte is very clean and safe, it just doesn't have the restaurants, bars, and vibe that DT SA has. Uptown Charlotte only has expensive places that rule the average person out from regularly enjoying.
6. Traffic isn't bad. Not bad at all.
7. People aren't that fat. The barbecue joints were the exception. I can't believe one person actually ordered the family meal. You guys love Chicken/Country Fried Steak. You don't have trouble finding that.
8. There are more hills and trees than I expected.
9. 100 degrees is not that hot. Not like Florida.
10. People are friendly. I had a guy come up and make conversation with me at North Star mall. That NEVER happens in Charlotte.
11. Anglos and hispanics seem to get along well and not hate each other.
12. Texans drive slowly. And carefully.
13. You can't look at someone in SA and know if they speak Spanish or English.

Just keep in mind these are just comparisons to NC. Oh, just to mention it, I loved SA. I think it blows Charlotte away. Thanks everybody.

The two in bold are completely false. Everything else is true though.

Welcome to San Antonio and I'm glad you had a nice time in your first visit.

I'd also like to add:

Taco Cabana is good food but is a local fast food chain so if you think that's good, you are going to really love the food in San Antonio.

Many people may not know that Charlotte calls their downtown "Uptown" so when you compared downtown SA with Uptown Charlotte, you're comparing both downtowns. Some people might think you were comparing a downtown with a uptown.

Some people don't realize that when it's [super] hot in SA, 100+, it's not humid. Like right now it's 97 degrees with 23% humidity. That's why June and July aren't so bad, it's really August that is the worst because it's the mid to low 90 degree days with 50+ humidity that get you.

Just some thoughts…

1. No way Mexican restaurants in North Carolina can compare to the ones we have here. But if you are eating at Taco Cabana, you wouldn’t know that.
2. Again, you must’ve been eating at Bill Miller’s or some other chain restaurants. Whereas I would admit that Memphis BBQ has it all beat; I’ve had NC BBQ, and if you go to REAL Texas BBQ places, there is no comparison.
3. Who says S.A. is ghetto and dirty? Sure, we’ve got some litter problems, but I’ve seen that all over the country. We could do better, but this town is no worse than most others
4. The roads aren’t great, but try living in Belgium. Plus, it’s not the quality of the roads here, but the lack of them. It’s the traffic that sucks bad here…
5. I have yet to find anyplace to compare with San Antonio’s Riverwalk. Atlanta’s Underground, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and Jacksonville’s River Walk are nice; but none of them have the atmosphere and vibe of our RiverWalk
6. Eh? Maybe compared with DC, but if you’d been here in the early to mid-90s, you’d know it used to be much better. But yes, it isn’t THAT bad…
7. I guess you weren’t at SeaWorld yesterday like I was. Inasmuch as I hate to admit it, on average, there is a greater percentage of overweight San Antonians than most places I’ve been.
8. Yep, realized that myself. But I travel to southern Germany sometimes, and when I come back it seems flatter and treeless…
9. Agree with you 100%. People say it’s humid here. I grew up in Jacksonville and went to college in Gainesville, Florida. This ain’t humid…
10. Yep, Texans are very friendly people. When you get out in the country, you’ll find that “real” Texans will wave to you as you pass on the road. The friendliness of Texas is one of the best things about this state!
11. What’s to hate?
12. That’s because they are usually talking on their cell phones, eating, or trying to text someone…but honestly, I didn’t think the driver’s in NC were so bad as to make the folks here look good in comparison! Maybe I am spoiled because I get the opportunity to drive at 130 mph safely on the German autobahns, but I would never say people here drive slowly or carefully.
13. No, it usually takes them saying something before you can determine which language they like to use.

Glad you enjoyed your time here, most people do. I had a chance to take a job in Raleigh-Durham, but we visited there and it was nice but did not compare with here. I spent my entire adult life in the Air Force, and when I finally got the chance to decide where I wanted to live, the choice was easy….San Antonio!

And God Bless Texas!

Cheers! M2

1. Yes, but neither is extremely good.
2. True, it's not--but you can get decent bbq here.
3. Who's been callin' SA dirty and ghetto? Lemme at 'em. We're dusty, not dirty.
4. OK. Maybe I'm just used to them, and can get anywhere I need to be.
5. Never been to Charlotte, but our downtown is wonderful.
6. True, our traffic is relatively mild compared to Austin, Dallas, and Houston.
7. Some of us are fat, some are fluffy. That's anywhere in the US. Too many processed foods and X-boxes. I hate chicken-fried stuff for the most part, but lots of folks love it, I suppose.
8. Yes, and had it rained prior to your arrival, we're usually quite green, too.
9. 100 degrees is nice, to me. If you don't like the heat, you will hate it here.
10. We are very sweet, but don't cross us.
11. Anglos and Hispanics actually marry here. Can ya believe that?
12. Which Texans drive slow? I get my doors blown off most mornings on 1604--and they are driving on the shoulder that clearly states "no driving on shoulder."
13. True. They might even speak German, Russian, or French.

San Antonio does rock! Glad you had a great visit! Keep us posted on your move.
