I had one giant roach fly into my 3rd floor apartment a couple years ago. (patio door was closed). Yes, roaches fly here. I thought it was a bird when I heard it crashing around in my kitchen. It was, no exhageration, 4 inches long. I think they area also called palmetto bugs.

Now I own a house, and had a Major scorpion infestation. But I am near new construction and they were clearing land. I had to have 3 different exterminators come to my house. The scorpions were in shoes, crawling across the kitchen, in my light fixtures....

However, scorpions here are NOT deadly. They will not even send you to the hospital. It is like getting a bee sting.

I lived here three years before seeing my first scorpion....so this is not the norm.

We have rattlesnakes. I have heard of people finding them in their garages or yard, but I have never run across one.

We have brown recluses. I have seen tons of them. We have tarantulas, never seen one. They are afraid of people and leave you alone.

Overall, none of these things are big enough issues that they would deter me from living here.

The biggest thing is fire ants. I have been stung by them probably 25 different occassions. I am lucky, they don't hurt too bad and only leave me itching for about 30 minutes. I'd rather them get me than mosquitos (of which we have FEW here compared to where I grew up). Some people have life threatening reactions to the fire ants though.
