the problem with fibre channel is the expense. The lines are the only "cheap" part of the equation and even that isn't cheap. An FC NIC is going to cost around $1K each and an FC switch is going to be pricey because it's hard to find one that has less than 20 ports and they start at over $5K.. It is VERY fast, but it's usually better for big companies and government agencies that have the deep pockets..

I figure I would use the fiber someday. Any ideas on what I could do with it ?
I don't think there is real use for it at home. Your Cat5e, will more than suffice.

The fastest internet we can get in residential SA is about 10 mpbs, I don't think we will be breaching 100mbps for at least 10 years. Fortunately you should be able to hook up a Giga bit router that can handle 1000mbps on your current Cat5e.

There is really no need to transfer data faster than that between different rooms in a residential house, unless you have a recording studio or do some serious video editing. Even then, you'd probably have most of your equipment in the same room.

Now, an off the wall possibility for having fiber in different rooms in the future is if you have some serious High Def Virtual reality simulation rooms. Star Trek style. Sipping on Congac at a Paris bar one moment, and at center field of a FIFA soccer match the next.

My only suggestion would be if you had a bunch of A/V equipment in one part of your house and you wanted to feed a myriad of cabling from another room, you could probably find adapters to terminate your inputs/outputs on fiber.

I know people that do such a thing at home, but with CAT5E and Coax; using coax for component video and audio and using the CAT5E for IR and USB as one example; all terminating into a closet. Here is some of the additional equipment you'd need in that scenario to give you an idea:

Cables To Go - 250ft Composite In Wall Cable - (2) RG6QS + (2) Cat5E (http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=314&sku=43075 - broken link)

Buffalo Round Micro IR Sensor - IR-350

You just need to find the same equipment but for fiber.

In the end, you are future proof, but I would have just opted for CAT6A (at the very highest) throughout the home. Never know... one day you may want to send uncompressed 1080p content throughout the home which would need roughly 4Gbps of throughput per stream.

Tapping fiber may prove daunting.

I just saw a commercial for RR Turbo at 15/2. Apparently, this speed if available to many in SA, though I'm not sure if it is where I live. When TW upgrades to DOCSIS 3.0 this year or next, tiers should go higher, though this is moot in the context of fiber in the home.

[quote=rd2007;4263537]We also have 2 Gb iSCSI, that might be a better solution for home use. Still crazy fast speeds, what would you need it for? and I know it's always better to be as fast as possible, but for me the cost increase isn't worth it.

Mine too. In fact G can support the 5000-8000kbps bitrate required for even 720p/1080p x264 content. Problem is my Xbox 1 that I use as an extender can't decode those resolutions very well... at best it can do Xvid encoded resolutions that are marginally better than DVD's 720x480. If its nvidia GPU were ever reverse engineered, that would be a different story.

Bluray peaks at 40Mbps so one would definitely need 'N' (and by N, I mean final N which hasn't been ratified) or Wired network to stream.

Dang your right. I just checked dsl-reports. No one in my zipcode (TW fiber area) is above 10. Then I checked within a 10 mile radius. There are a few topping 15 mpbs. I wish I knew which zipcode that was.

I have G, and it is too choppy to my laptop. It has poor wireless card though. Most people I know just run a CAT5 to their xbox or Wii, whether it be ugly or not.

I think the new asus ebox or wind pc, may be an option. I hear they top out at 720p though. Those are going to run for $200-$250 and run on 35 watts of electricity. Imagine downloading to that all day, and just turn on your NAS or external drive and unload.

not true. if your home is set up to have fiber all the way to the premise then att uverse will set it up that way. and if your home can accommodate this then you shouldnt really have issues with the service. if there is, unplugging and replugging in the equipment will most likely fix anything with fiber to the prem if there is an issue. and the gateway (modem) syncs in just a few seconds assuming there is not outages or network issues causing a problem. fiber to the prem is definitely the way to go if you can do it.

I have RR Turbo 15/2 and it's actually higher than that at times. I'm in 78253, but someone told me you can only get it with a contract. I already did the two year deal, so no biggy for me.

Tone is right on this one. I watched the AT&T tech run fiber from the box to my home. Even made sure to ask whether it was copper or not.

can you connect out from the modem? a former coworker had this in Japan and he got crazy fast speeds, but that was with fiber to his desktop

I have gvtc fiber and I reach 8-10mpbs. They have me throttled. I only get an Ethernet outlet with pre-authorized access.

Nothing close to what I have seen in Japan. Even in residential Japan, I saw a friend reach only 80mpbs. He was probably using a 10/100 router then.
