Default Car Tax/ Fee's & Decals.....

I'm curious as to what the requirements are for registering our cars. Here in VA we have to pay license plate fees, registration fees, and personal property taxes. Then we have to have annual car inspections. When you add it all up, it's nearly $1000 a year.

Please tell me it's not this way in SA.

No where close to that. I forgot how tags are figured out but most I have every had to pay was about $150 then the inspection is about $20 I think that is about all yearly that you have to pay for. When we lived in Nebraska our car was about $1200. so happy to get back down her for that.

I've got a Harley, a van, and a car. Registration is in the neighborhood of $60 bucks or so a year, and a safety inspection is $15 or less depending on where you go. If I remember right, the inspection is $13.50, and some of the inspection places charge you a buck or two for the service. So a little under a hundred a year per vehicle.

Thanks for the info! As I sit here and weigh the pros and cons of moving, that really helps justify the outrageous property tax! We're almost a break even point, figuring in the lack of state income tax, and now no personal property tax and ridiculous fees on our cars. It just keeps getting better.

Default Registering Cars in Texas

Welcome to San Antonio. Here is what you need to do to register cars in Texas:

1. Get a Proof of Insurance form from your car insurance company (tell them you're in Texas)
2. Get a vehicle inspection ($12.50)
3. Submit a vehicle title/registration form (ftp://ftp.dot.state.tx.us/pub/txdot-...orms/130-u.pdf)
4. Pay a registration fee (ftp://ftp.dot.state.tx.us/pub/txdot-.../2007fees.pdf). This can be anywhere from $52.30 (2001 and older cars) to $70.30 (2005 and new cars).
5. Pay Title application fee ($28 or $33)
6. Pay new resident tax of $90
7. Finally, get a Texas Driver's License ($24 for 6 years). Just show them your original drivers license and all you have to do is pass an eye exam. You will have to surrender your old license. They will also ask for your proof of insurance.

The most the whole process should cost is about $206. Here are the links where the info came from:
