I live on the Southside at Division and I-35. I moved here from the northwest side about a year and a half ago when I decided to go back to school and quit working. NOTHING has ever happened here to make me feel like its not safe. Its obviously a lower income neighborhood, but I knew all my neighbors within one month of living here (which never happened on the north side) and we all watch out for each other. I don't even know of a car being broke into since I have been here. I hear it used to be bad but things are now good.
I think there are also some nice apts around I37 & SW Military that are safe. Hope that helps!

My grandmother lives over there in the Theo/Malone area and has seen the area go from good to bad back to pretty good again. There are quite a few loud cars and it IS lower income but we're noticing a lot of what has been going on in the Monticello Park area where a lot of the older houses are being flipped and are turning out very nicely. It's working out fairly well for the area. My grandmother also owns quite a few rental properties in the area and always has nice families living in them which surprised me initially but I just remember what it USED to be like. They are making lots of improvements. The CVS on the other side of the highway off of Nogalitos really brightened up that area. Hopefully they'll follow suit with other small businesses. I like that it's old mixed with new now, too. There are still some pretty cool, funky little thrift stores mixed in with some of the newer buildings, businesses and you'll NEVER find an area where you can get work on your car done cheaper then you will around there!! ;-) As a matter of fact across the street from Tommy's restaurant there's a place called General Auto & Truck - I think they've been around since the 50's? Maybe earlier? and they are SO inexpensive and SO honest. We drive over there to have our cars worked on.
It's one of those areas where you want to find the right "section" to live in, that's all. Some of the streets still need some "house flipping" action!

I love the southside. I grew up near Southcross and S. Flores so it doesnt get more Southside than that and now I live off of Presa and 410 so that sort of still the south side. There are a lot of new and nice communities over where I live but dont know if you consider that southside or southeast.

My grandmother's house was off of S. Flores. Right next to Briscoe Elementary school. It's torn down now. The city bought the properties to enlarge the schoolyard but the tree we always climbed/hid in is still there. It makes me cry to drive by there. She would have loved the direction that things are going down the street towards S. Alamo.
I'm very comfortable over there.

i live on the southside. Its amazing how people come on this board and talk about how horribile certain neighboorhoods are like the people who live in them cant read or have internet access. Anyways i think the southside is very mixed. THere are lots of good things and bad things as in most areas.

I loved living on the southside. It's where I grew up and spent most of my adult life. As metalfish said, it is very mixed, but that's what makes it interesting, gives it character, IMO.

HAHA. . . I'm sorry. That was just so blunt and to the point that it was funny. I'm on your side, though. It's no different than anywhere else. Every side of town has it's own problems.

Not to sound mean but with the section8 thing now it is every where. I suppose there may be somegood aspects of the Southside but none I can recall. The NW side has some decent neighborhoods.

Section 8 is everywhere, not just the southside.
When was the last time you were in the southside, if ever?
