take the 30 min trip to seguin
We needed to replace a lost ss card, my wife took my kids with her downtown and was disgusted with the place and after feeling like she waited long enough with out any advancement, she left minus the new card.
Since I travel to Seguin often enough I decided to visit and boy was it worth it, I was in and out within minutes aside from the fact that the office was a new construction with a very nice and comfortable waiting area.
Best of luck.

I agree, it's often a better deal to go to New Braunfels, Seguin, etc., for any of this stuff (SS office, DMV, etc).
I have had good luck with the Downtown SS office though myself, going in the afternoon.

I was going to suggest the same thing. I use the Kerrville office.

I went at around 11 not too long ago. I went there at that time and even though I still had to wait a good 30-45 mins I think it's better than lining up before they open, because many people have the same idea...go at times when other people may be busy doing other stuff....like maybe mid afternoon, around 2 PM. Take a book or a toy for your 4 yr old to keep the child occupied. Good Luck!

I took my wife in a couple of months ago to sign up for SS. First of all, if you're not within 3 months of your birthday, forget it. We wasted our time applying 6 months prior to 62nd birthday. Anyway, arrived about a 1/2 hour before opening (Alamo Downs) and were about 10th in line. Most of the people were there to get SS cards. I don't recall seeing any children there so don't know their policies on this. You will be called to one of the windows based on your number when signing into the computer. Then you will be called in by a worker inside. All in all, it took about 45 minutes-1 hour to complete the process. Don't forget to bring all the proof paperwork with you.

Wow...thanks for all the advice. I'm debating whether to go to Seguin or to the Alamo Downs office around 2. Hmmm....decisions, decisions!
Thanks again, though...I appreciate the input.

Just to give an update for anyone else who may need to go...
We went to the Seguin office today. Got there at 10 am and was out by 10:45! Nice, new office and very easy to get to.
I think the extra 1/2 hour it took to go to Seguin was definitely worth it!
Thanks everyoe for all the advice...it really helped.

I went to the downtown office yesterday at 3pm to request a replacement card for my daughter and only had to wait about 15 minutes. The scattered showers might have kept most people from going. Unfortunately, I was missing some paperwork so I had to go again today. I arrived at 9am and was expecting a large crowd due to some people not being able to go yesterday, but once again I only waited about 15 minutes. Perhaps the chance of rain kept them away once again.

I had to get a new card and happened to be working in Kerrville at the time. Took 10 mins, tops. I had been in the Alamo Downs office a few months prior, took one look and walked out.
