If you are headed to Southtown, also check out La Tuna. It has a very laid back atmosphere and to me, the food is good.

For a historical sense, stop by the Menger Bar. It is a small bar, but very interesting. AND maybe you will get to see Teddy Roosevelt when you are there...
What kind of food does La Tuna have? I have never been there, which is odd, I know.

Just wanted to add re: Main Plaza, while I have no clue about a Farmer's market, I do know that when I was working right next to Main Plaza they were having performances of one kind or another every day @ lunchtime. My ex-coworker sent me a text message a few weeks ago that they had belly dancers and I'd missed it (so why didn't she tell me when it started? i live 2 miles away! hmph!)..

anyway, something to keep in mind with regard to things to do/see downtown.

Went cruising downtown Saturday eve with a friend. Had some coffee at Ruta Maya's (looks like a place that gets crowded late at night), ate at the new Casbeer's and didn't see any ghost, drove around Lavaca (think I saw your house Chaka), Main Plaza looks nice but didn't get out because didn't want to pay $15 for parking and went by La Tuna which was packed! Went to one of the CAM (Contemporary Art Month) receptions. Ate one of the best waffles I have ever had at the Little Aussie on Ave B today. They recently started having live music on Fri/Sat and have started a brunch on Sun now and intend to have live music for brunch also. This place has really awesome food and an intimate eclectic atmosphere. Thanks for all the tips!

Guadalupe Coffee Shop on 1320 Guadalupe is my best spot for a coffee and meeting place, as well as alot of local art. Have a problem with City Hall? chances are your council people are there for a meeting during the week.

Linda's Mexican Restaurant has great prices and the full mexican plate with iced tea is only $5

Jimmy's Pizza on Fest is the best pizza i have had in a mom and pop in ages. Large pizza is only $7

I order the parmesan crusted chicken sandwich (hold the bread, not because I am low-carbing it but to me it's yummier) I also enjoy their ribeye sandwich. The people I lunch with order the fish tacos...I am not a fish person so I can only tell you that they like them.

Oooh that sounds yummy! The chicken sandwich (and I agree, sounds better w/o bread).. not a fish taco fan here.
I used to make my own kind of parmesan crusted chicken, I wonder if this is better? Mine had red pepper flakes too. How are the prices?

Shilo's deli is really good. Then go for a walk along the unpopulated part of the river near King William.

VERY reasonable prices and fun food. NOT a dress up place at all...if the weather is good, sit outside on a picnic table under the pecan trees...we met up there a few weekends ago and had a BLAST!

Talking about all this food is making me hungry. I am eager to check out the Lamb Burger at the Cove because the guy on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives from the Food Network said that it was the best he had ever had! Better go before Aug 18th when the show will air and then everyone in SA will be heading there!

My husband & I were in SA over the weekend looking for a place to live and had the extreme fortune of discovering the Cove! I had the excellent shrimp taco & fish taco and he had the bison burger which he raved about. Good bottle beer selection, too. And the fact that they serve locally and naturally raised meat is something worth supporting! We also enjoyed the beer at Blue Star and lattes at Lazarus. Definitely have to check out Ruta Maya...I didn't know there was one in SA.

Chaka, I would love to see your list of downtown recs
