Is that meant in a good way? Or not so good way? I only make it out to the Stone Oak area once every couple months so I don't really have a frame of reference.

Unfortunately MMM hit it right on the head. Most people here go to bars, get drunk, and drive home. Completely retarded, but it's a very real epidemic here.
It's also what they do every other night of the week as well.. I just finished working three months of the late night shift and it was beyond easy to spot them. The cops here must drive around with their eyes closed or something.

Work in the ER and take care of those who had the absence of mind to venture out (or who lost their mind somewhere along the way).

I'm saving up money to go to Vegas so my husband and I don't go out much, but on occasion we like to hang out in the So Flo area and catch some live music or hit the $1 beer bars.

Let me start by saying I'm not defending drunk drivers, but I am saying that this problem is another large consequence of the city's development pattern. Having lived in various large cities in several countries I can say that I have never lived in a place where the bars/clubs/night life in general was so spread out. I recently moved back to town and am having difficulty figuring out how people go out in SA.
In Boston, New York, Rome, etc. a person can go out and have fun to their heart's content very safely. It starts with the fact that they don't even need to take their car out. They walk or use public transportation. The bars and clubs are clustered together in areas that make it easy for someone to go bar hopping by simply walking down the street (think Austin's 6th Street or DC's Adams Morgan). And when you're ready to go home you can cheaply and conveniently take a taxi or public transportation home. That eliminates the need for a drunk person to drive home. You walk out of the bar and hail a taxi or hop on the late night train/bus. You can't do this in SA because every place is an island unto itself. Even areas near the major universities - Trinity, UIW, UTSA lack the density of businesses and infrastructure (like sidewalks or taxi stands) to make this possible.
My friends and I enjoy going out, but it's extremely difficult because we always have to drive to the bar or club that is surrounded by a sea of parking lots and then when the night is over we have to spend extra time just sitting around to make sure we're sober enough to drive home. In college we could walk out to and home from every bar, club, frat or house party and never even contemplated driving drunk. If SA were more pedestrian/public transport friendly we might see fewer alcohol related incidents. I for one am looking at relocating downtown because I miss the conveniences of a big city.

Lived here all my life , almost 56 years . There has always been a little bar , beer Joint , or cantina on every corner. People drive down the road stop swill down a beer and take off to the next one . Old west mentality. But, if they want to put a stop to it they know what to do. Shutdown all the little corner boozeries. Or stop everyone that comes out of one. Hand out very few liquor liscenses only to establishments that serve substantial food ( not beer nuts & pickled pigs feet) I mean full meals. Strictly limit drinks to each person. Try the designated driver deal or better alternative. When they get somebody DWI slap it to them. Especially the 2nd,3rd, 4th offenders. As it is now it's just pay the lawyers and keep on keepin on.

Not like that fool who worked at the courthouse, and was on his ninth DWI! Does anyone recall that? His job required him to drive, so the county provided him with a driver to haul his happy a$$ around to allow him to do his job! That was the most ludicrous thing I'd ever heard!

Don't recall that, but that kind of nonsense goes on everywhere. It seems any job connected to city, state or federal gov't is the job to have. Great Benefits , good pay usually no skills or training required, special treatment of all kinds, good insurance oh so many fringe benefits.
