Some of these places are really bad news....some are very reputable....ya just have to take a look see! With the hospitals so close, often family and friends of patients stay in these kind of hotels.....but so do a lot of transients. Just take care to know what to ask for.

The problem is that I am not in the US and I have never visited the US before. I will be arriving there after a long and tiring journey of more than 6-hours so there would be no time for me to check those places out in person before i decide which one is good and which is not! Aren't there any websites where people advertise for short-term stuff ? family stay or whatever ?

Well....ok....stay a night or two in a good hotel and get rested. Then go shopping for longer stay hotels. I don't know of a web site that "rates" extended stay hotels. Besides.....I personally don't trust online "ratings" as they are often skewed with favorable posts or scores from company employees.

One place that "looks" decent from the outside is Motel 6 at Fredericksbreg Rd and Louis Pasteur Ct. But...exterior looks are deceiving....again..go in...ask security questions about amenities (laundry facilities)...and check out the rooms...especially the bathroom CLOSELY.

BTW - If you are not familiar with US hotel chains.....nicer and safe moderate priced hotels would be Holiday Inn Express, the Fairmont by Marriott , Clarion, Best Western, Quality Inn ...etc. Be sure they are "newer" hotels....ask when you make reservations. If you're flying in to San Antonio International Airport, most of these hotel chains will be within a short cab ride. When making your reservation, ask for a location near the airport. Lots of activity around the airport area....dining, shopping, easy access to anything.

The Medical Center area with more extended stay hotels is close to I-10 and about 1/2 way between both UTSA campuses.

I wish you luck!

Perhaps the school can offer some alternatives. You did mention that you will be attending UTSA? I'm sure they have a list of recommended short-stays, since you'll only need it for a week you should be able to find something pretty easy. Travelocity and yahoo both offer ratings for hotels, but you have to read them with some degree of objectivity.

Now, an unsolicted word of friendly advice...
I was reading your other posts to get a better sense of your housing situation and something that struck me immediately was your incessant use of the term "chick". Maybe times have changed, but I gather since you are a PhD student, you are not in your young 20s anymore. I will only speak for myself, but "chick" just seems a bit offensive and being that you aren't from around here, you may want to use it a little more sparingly!

I wish you the best of luck in your education and housing and I am sure you will find San Antonio a truly delightful place to call home!

Thank you very much for the advice and I did not know that the word I used could be taken offensively. I am sorry, I did not know that. I am totally new to American English and I have always used British English.
Apologies to everybody.

Don't worry about using whatever language you learned or want to use, compared to some of the phraseology we hear nowadays, 'chick' is a lot better than some of the current slang being used to describe women!

Just keep a smile on your face and enjoy San Antonio! Most people here are not that uptight!

Cheers! M2

No need to apologize.....but as a female....I do agree with the advice. And as M2 said....it could be worse! I use a lot of words my kids tell me are "taboo" now....and that's being 80% Texan!

And no one is advocating you do! Traditionally, Texans were more polite than most of this country; but that seems to have waned. Used to be you'd hear more people hear say 'please' and 'thank you,' along with 'sir or 'ma'am;' as well as holding the door for ladies; but now it all seems a rarity. Of course people used to also drive in the righthand lane and signal. Now it is a rare day when I don't drive somewhere and encounter some idiot who is talking/texting on their cell phone and blocking traffic...

Can we bring back the good old days?

Cheers! M2
