I would like to take our 8 year old (almost 9 year old) twins tubing, but my husband says they are too young. They are dying to go after watching all of the tubers in San Marcos over the weekend. Is there a better place to take kids of this age tubing? I guess I'm looking for a more gentle route, not lots of big rapids or small waterfalls. I'm also looking for someplace more family friendly?

Thanks,
Betsy

I've heard the Frio is great for kids, as it's pretty deep and slower water.

I haven't been tubing since I very near died 3 years ago in some rapids (and I'm a very strong swimmer) on the Comal. If I were to go again, it'd be the Frio, as people have told me that it's a nice easy float.

Let me recommend Guadalupe Canoe Livery in Spring Branch. It right on 281 where the river crosses. It's not crowded and they are family friendly. I took my 7 year old & they gave her a tube with a bottom and rope to attach it to mine.

Check out South Llano State Park south of Junction. It is a great park for kids. Once you're out of SA, it's a quick trip on IH10 (speed limit's 75mph after Kerrville). I first took my daughter there when she was 9. We camped. Whitetail deer, axis deer, wild turkeys , hawks, turtles, ground squirrels. Deer come into the camp sites. The park headquarters is usually swarming with hummingbirds (up close), and swifts build nests on the porch. Since the South Llano floods every year or so, the river changes, so the float is always a little different. It's an easy float, some spots are deep, but an adult could probably wade the entire river within the park. The park rents large tubes with handles. (Take some cord to connect the tubes, so they don't get away from you, and a mesh bag for trash) My daughter loves to fish while tubing. Water's cool, but not cold like San Marcos. If you don't camp, stay at Hill's Motel (nice people) in town, eat at Isaac's Restaurant next door. There's a DQ and McD off IH10 if you have to. And whatever you do and where ever you go, teach your kids not to litter and to pick up trash, even if it's not theirs.

The Frio has many good places for kids to swim and tube while being one of the most beautiful rivers. Both kids and adults will enjoy it. We see a lot of people at the crossings with kids. PM me or check below for any questions..
