If you just need to get rid of stuff and can't haul it somewhere, don't forget about Freecycle.org. Here's the link The Freecycle Network - about the San Antonio Group
It's great for giving away "lots" of items, bulky items, boxes, just about anything that you don't want to go to a landfill, or Goodwill won't take. You don't have to give your phone or email initially.....and they are very strict with what can be posted. If I have a yard sale (listed on Craigslist!) and have anything leftover, I post that on Freecycle and it's gone!
I never let anyone in the house...or even in the garage. Always have a friend or someone with you when arranging to meet anyone (as others have said.)
I have yet to have someone show up from Freecycle ads!...not like Craigslist (as FF mentioned...that does happen).
Did anyone see on the news today...the story of the couple that rented an apartment through Craigslist? (not here) I didn't get the full details. Apparently, it was rented out to more than one family! They found out the day they were moving in and saw another family was halfway moved in. Sorry....sketchy details....but it takes all kinds!

Too bad this site doesn't have a "sell 'n swap" page just for CD members. That way you are dealing with people you kinda "know" and feel more comfortable with.

There is a classified section of CD. Is this what you mean?

Maybe, but I really wouldn't post something there first because what are the odds that anyone local would read it?

I love Craigslist, I have both sold items and bought items on it. My neighbor down the street found her HOUSE on Craigslist when she lived in another state. In this day and age, with our economy, gas prices, etc...you can get some really good bargains and you can make a little money with things you don't use anymore. I have had really great experiences, as a matter of fact I had someone famous come buy something from little old me. I say go for it. No shows can be a little bit of a pain. I agree use pictures, be honest, and be willing to come down on your price!

I have also had good luck with Craigslist. I have sold many baby related items. I always get more for the items than at a yard sale. I make sure to send my husband to meet the person and only close by, like at HEB or Home Depot p/l. I have not had any problems with people emailing afterwards. Good luck to you.

I've sold furniture on CL with no problems.
I haven't bought anything (yet).

I've sold a ton of stuff (all told ~ 450 postings but a lot of repeat reposts) and continue to, both here in San Antonio, and before in Chicago. I also found some pretty good deals in the past but definitely selling more than buying...

I am alittle disenchanted with Craigslist right now. We are on a "break". I have my house for sale and had a bunch of furniture and misc items that I knew would get more for on CL than my yardsale and not worth ebaying, so I was a Craigslist posting fool for awhile. I just had a run of bad luck of no shows. People begging for me to hold it, promisepromisepromise they will be there the next day and not. I had a lady from h e l l want me to meet her somewhere (uhhh, no lady, I am pregnant and not hauling a big old desk somewhere across San Antonio for you!)ask for a discount 2x, swear she was coming, make an excuse why she didn't, BEG for yet another day. Finally I Goodwilled it- I was so sick of that thing and HER and wanted it GONE!
But before that, I had great luck buying and selling and few cancellations. Here is what I have learned:
Definately do not put your phone# in the ad.
The best chance to know if someone is serious is if they write: "here is my phone #, call me- I can come today"
Craigslist karma gods will get those no-call-when-cancels-no-show'ers in the end.
Good luck!

I couldn't agree more did0c... always people who express interest; even sharing phone numbers but in general no shows. This problem seems to be worse as of late too... luckily I'm still selling, but it is nonsensical how people would spend time showing interest, only to not really be interested at all.
I'm also in a predicament as you are with smaller items. Niche items; Not worth ebaying; but don't really feel like moving (when I move). Those are the most difficult items to sell... a garage sale would be easier I suppose, but craigslist just seems easier and more logical. Probably because I've never done a garage sale.
