I had no clue until today when we went to the mall there... apprently what an employee said was that an investor offered Dillards a price they couldnt refuse to close that particular location... Keep on the look out they said for Macys to be the next to close at the River Center mall next year sometime.. Would have loved to have know, good deals galore.. still some clothes and items left as of today..

Haven't heard anything about the Macy's, but that entire mall is being redeveloped with more high-end stores and restaurants. It is/was supposed to start this summer.

They aren't demolishing the Joske's building, just giving it and Rivercenter Mall a facelift. The only thing that will potentially be demolished is the parking garage along Commerce St, which is supposed to be the site of a new hotel (phase III of the project).

Dillard's, Inc. owned the Joske Building. They sold it in June to the current owners of the mall, Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. Although there were plans to restore the original facade on the Joske Building it appears as though those were abandoned. The AAC renderings of the proposed renovation of the building that accompanied a June 6, 2008 article in the "Express-News" announcing the sale show a restored 1939 Art Deco facade, not the restored 1909 facade.

As far as the Macy's site goes, if it is anything like the Marriott, they are leasing the land on which the building was built from ACC. ACC would have to change the terms of the lease and buy the building from Macy's, Inc. It is a possibility that ACC might want to take over that space as well, although it would be a huge loss to the downtown retail environment to loose the last major department store.

Additionally, the RiverCenter property includes the vacant lot next to Macy's as well as the surface parking lot located across the street from RiverCenter's Crockett Street Garage.

I think a Canadian company owned Joske's towards it's end or after becoming Dillard's. Several years ago, I guess. I remember going in there in the late 50's early 60's. They always had someone demonstrating the latest kitchen gadget. Who knows, old Ron Popeil probably did a few demonstrations there in his early days.

They should change the name as well. Rivercenter Mall follows the late indoor mall naming trend by actually calling it a mall. A new name would help shift the mall into an upscale shopping destination. How about something like "Riverside Plaza"? What's your suggestion?
