Hey everybody, have any of you noticed a dirt pile in your yard that initially looks like a fire ant pile (has that fine, recently turned dirt look to it) but also has a deep (like over 12 inches) tunnel beside the pile that is about one inch in diameter?

I can't figure out what has been making these things in my yard. They're not as large as a gopher hole (only one inch in diameter) like I said, but no insect makes that big a tunnel, right?

I doubt it could be a rodent. I havent seen one in SA since I moved here. It could be a "Niño de la tierra" is like a big bugg that has alot of rows of teeth on its belly (becarefull if you come near one, a bite could cause the whole affected area to blacken, worse than a bruise! then lots and lots of puss comes out. Sometimes could even rot!). I dont know what they are called in English.

I've got a few of those in my yard and i have no idea what is the cause, my dog digs on these holes but I have yet to figure out what it could be. I'm new to TX so there is a lot of things that are new to us. Last year when we moved we noticed these black grasshoppers all over the place not just on the subdivision I live in but also right in front of many businesses, this year I have yet to see one.

I have holes in my yard that frogs come out of but I think they were from the ground cracking from being dry.

Those little suckers hide somewhere until it's rainy. My vote is for toads.

Do you think it may be a cicada killer wasp? The females catch cicadas, drag them to a burrow they have dug. Then they lay their egg on the cicada and cover up the entrance.

I found a link to them here:

cicadaintro.html (http://ww2.lafayette.edu/%7Ehollidac/cicadaintro.html - broken link)

It shows an example of the hole for comparison. We had a bunch of them next to the house last year burying their eggs. Those holes were about an inch in diameter, too. The website says that the holes can be as much as a meter long, too.
The wasps are not harmful, but are a bit scary for those that don't know what they are.
Hope the link helps!
